Roundabout etiquette

There are many places in Melbourne where trams go through the middle of
a roundabout.

Fletcher St in Essendon is one such place near me.

It requires care and concentration on the part of tram drivers and
motorists.

Most Melbourne tram roundabouts are at the southern end of route 12 to St Kilda. At one Middle Park roundabout, the late cricketing legend Shane Warne in his Mercedes motor car was banged into by a tram, filmed by a resident who lived in a flat above the roundabout. Victorian road laws specify give way to trams at roundabouts.

I remember as a child seeing a roundabout in Randwick in Sydney and wondering and wondering how a tramline could get around it. Later I learned that in Melbourne tram trams went directly through the roundabouts.

That would be Kingsford Nineways, where trams were running through the middle of the roundabout, years before modern roundabouts.

Yes - I always suggest Route 1  to South Melbourne Beach as the most
interesting tram ride in Melbourne for visitors - including the winding
route and the roundabouts.

I never realised that Sydney had even had such roundabouts. I learnt something new today.
