I've always rather liked the Melbourne X1s.

They are a simple box with doors and seats - just doing the job of
carrying passengers with no frills.

The A class are (in my opinion) the current equivalent - a simple box
that has no pretensions but gets the job done.

The 467 pic is at the Tramway Heritage Centre at Bylands and the 282 pic
is at the corner of Collins and Bourke Streets - yes really.

Mal Rowe who would not send either to a high traffic event!

Well I'm a fan of the A's also just a pity that I don't get to Melbourne often enough to go and experience them.

Note to self --- make a concentrated effort this Christmas period to do so.

A tram is just a glorified garden shed on wheels and I guess the X1 is the original!

And 466 still does a good trade in the City of Sails.

The X1 is ideal for the Wynyard Quarter tramway. The one man nature of their design makes her a fantastic little tram and is known to carry full seated loads with some sandees for good measure. Though slightly... unorthodox... in her Auckland red, she is still a good little tram.

With all due respect to the Sydney P class, I reckon the X1 is more like
a garden glasshouse than a garden shed!

Yes, that is the legendary Len Millar driving 466 on its Ballarat holiday.

Mal Rowe - who always enjoys the view from an X1

I've always considered the X1 to be a Mebournised version of the Birneys. The X2s had class.
