In the 1950s the MMTB was concerned about increasing congestion.

They set out to gather evidence by setting up a photographer at various
locations and taking a photo every few minutes.

The attached is one such photo, taken from the Franklin St signal box. -
not a lot of congestion but a nice glimpse of the times.

The 'double parking' visible at left was one of the key issues the MTB
wanted addressed.

The only congestion seems to be self generated with 5 trams northbound
waiting to shunt in Victoria St.

The car at left with dash canopy lighting is probably 920; it has
already had holes cut in the canopy to show a bit more light.

It was Wattletree Rd to City according to a list I have.

So probably on the way back to Malvern depot as your second post suggests.

Peter,
My Research Notes describe it as Wattletree Rd Cnr. Out of use from 1/11/1970. First used circa 1935.

Gentlemen

The wonderful photograph and learned discussion caused me to reflect on how I “learned up” on tram route numbers.

It was surely from a copy of “Destination City” that I I would have perused on the wonderful book stand in the Model Dockyard. I recall it was the second edition (blue cover) as I was too young when the first edition (green cover) was current.

In more recent tunes, wasn’t there a list published of Melbourne tram route history? I recall Barry George was involved in preparing that list. Is Barry still with us?

Getting back to to the current discussion, I seem to remember 5A was the Tooronga Road crossover on Wattletree Road. But “Wattletree Road Corner” may have been the case.

The photo also shows the destination signs as used prior to the 1955 route rationalisation.

The 64 is clearly “East Brighton” and note “East Malvern” for route 5.

Enthusiasts from the era who’d have first hand knowledge of all this must be few on the ground in 2026?

I also recall that we learnt our tram route numbers, amongst other things, whilst hovering around the rear fence of BHHS (is a lettuce) during lunch.
