Good afternoon all.

I am planning a to Moremi and Khwai in Botswana in Sep 26. I will be travelling with a Toyota Prado and a Bushlapa Baobab. Could any one please advise the road conditions  from Maun to South Gate, South Gate to Xakanaxa and South Gate to North Gate (Khwai Campsite). Is the bridge at Khwai river crossable with the my car ad caravan? Any idea of the gravel road condition from Khwai bridge to Mababe and back to South Gate. Your valued input will be appreciated. Dave - Limpopo SA.

Hallo Dave,

The wooden bridge at Khwai North Gate is doable with the Bushlapa, yes.

The area has had excessive rains this year and the main transit road (Khwai-Mababe-Maun) is in very bad condition - it is dry now but very deep potholes. On top of that, much of Moremi is under water, and there is currently a detour in place from South Gate to Xakanaxa, you cannot use the main road - and this detour has some very deep water crossings, people are currently changing their bookings from South Gate to Xakanaxa. And there is still plenty of water coming down towards the Delta, water levels are rising daily.

Have a look on Facebook at the Moremi Game Reserve Sightings group, there is lots of info there on the roads in Moremi. Also look on DriveBots for other roads in Botswana.

Regards/Groete

Lizette

Hey Dave

Conditions can chance quickly, but end of Sept would be fine. Take in account the consideration of Lizette, it was and is still a very wet year.
We were in Khwai and Moremi 24-27 June 2026. The water from Angolo was just arriving, so every day we so the water a bit higher 😀
The water of the rain in April-May was still visible in many places, and with every thunderstorm (two  in the week before we arrived), the potholes are filling up again with water.
The bridge over the river Khwai, at the Moremi site is an enourms muddy pothole, but we saw Toyota's with trailer crossing.
If it stays dry this winter, September will be no problem.
The gravel road transit road from Khwai to Mababe, is in bad conditions, there is a detour to enter or leave Khwai, due to a water filled pothole that even trucs can not cross. The airstrip in Khwai was still for 60% under water.
Coming from Maun to Mababe, there are still detours for water or muddy potholes, a bit before Mababe there is section that is well maintained of the gravel road, but once left Mababe behind and direction Khwai, the road is bad. It took us 5,5 hours from Maun to Khwai.
Water crossings of the Mbudi river to go from Khwai to Magoto is not possible, you need to take the transit road. Small water holes, are now more like a lake.
But I guess within two months conditions will have improved, if it stays dry.

Have a nice time in Moremi and Khwai,

Cheers
