Namibia border food restriction

Morning all,

We are  planning a trip to Namibia, August - September this year, entering at Vioolsdrif.

What food are we allowed to take across the border?  Probably a shorter list than what we are not allowed to take.  I assume tinned food and dry goods are okay.

On-line enquiry indicates no meat in whatever form, beef, pork, poultry, no dairy, no eggs.

Our route will be along the western side.  Are there reasonable grocery shops in Rosh Pinah for a first grocery top-up? There appears to be a Spar and a Choppies.   Perhaps get essentials there and do a bigger shop at Swakopmund. 

Keetmanshoop has major brand stores, but we would prefer to head directly west after crossing the border.

This will be a 2 month trip heading to Epupa Falls, then across Etosha, returning down the eastern side, Waterberg Plateau, Gross Barman, Hardap and back home.

Hallo Denys,

No tinned or cooked meat either, since some time last year. See attached.

Best is to do a shop in Rosh Pinah as suggested, their shops are usually well-stocked. Try and contact the Spar and hear if you can place an order for collection a certain date, then you can specify the meat, veg etc. you want, they usually will vacuum pack and freeze it for you too.

I have a friend that I could put you in contact with that may help with these Q&A’s.

He is a tour operator/owner based in Namibia and does the whole Nam > Bots > Zam > Zim tours.

 

Shout if that would help. I will need to get hold of him first though. I am sure he has Starlink 😉

No poultry either - due to avian flu. And no pork due to swine flu. No worries, Namibia is well stocked!

Hi all, 

I entered Nam last Aug from Mata Mata.   When checking my fridges, the guy joking said "we confiscate everything apart from cold beer", and that is kind of the mentality you should have when planning.

They did search the vehicle and caravan, so don't try hiding things in easily accessible places...

I have no idea why anyone would want to pack food etc for trips to Namibia, Botswana & Zambia, all you are doing is wasting fuel driving a heavier vehicle.

These destinations are well covered with food and fuel suppliers.
