Hello everyone,

We are planning several trips to South Africa over the next few years. That's why we are looking for a place in Cape Town where we can store our camping equipment safely and at a reasonable price. We tried to contact ‘Storageking’ via their website, but they did not respond.

We are grateful for any tips.

Best regards,
Knut

Good morning Knut,

Is it just camping gear, or is it for the vehicle as well?

If it is only camping gear - storage facilities can be pretty pricey! I have used Store Secure, they were a bit more reasonable with their rates than the neighbouring StorAge facility - and they are open on weekends: https://maps.app.goo.gl/nHqSgvMdAReW1mdD6

It usually becomes more affordable as you travel further out of Cape Town, so try Grabouw/Elgin/Bot River area: https://bakenshoogte.co.za/en/stoor-fasiliteit-2/  https://space4me.co.za/

Check if they are open after hours or weekends - some storage facilities you cannot get access on a weekend. StorAge is expensive but you get your own access control and can go in 24/7.

Good luck!

Regards/Groete

Hello Lizette,
you are realy a great source of knowledge about southern Africa. Thanks for your help.
Until now it is only one or two boxes of camping gear.
I may turn to the forum again when we are looking for a place for our camper vehicle ;-)

Knut

Hallo Knut,

You are welcome!

StoreSecure and StorAge has small 3x1m units, they should be more affordable than the 3x3 or 3x6m units.

Knut

If you are flying in from abroad to do camping trips why base your equipment in Cape Town? Johannesburg is far more convenient as it is closer to the north of the country, Kruger, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique and all places north. There are more flights into Johannesburg and plenty of places for storage.

Hi Bobby,
you are right. Johannesburg is the better place to start to the north. But we will stay 4 weeks in the Cape area in Oktober and will go to Kgalagdi in April 27 from there. And we are thinking about further trips to Cape Town. But may be, that we will change to JB later.
Thanks for your comment.

Hello Bobby

Do you have some suggestions for storage in gauteng / Johannesburg?
I stored my vehicle in Jhb somewhere in 2017 for a year, but have forgotten where that was - great service by the people there.

Later in 2026 I will be looking for options "up north" again as all the comments you made are true.

Regards
Dirk

Good morning Dirk,

There are two ways to find the storage facilities on the T4A map:

  1. use the T4A tripplanner: https://map.tracks4africa.co.za/map, click on the "services" icon on the right, and then type storage into the search block.
You will get a list of storage facilities across Africa - if you zoom in on Gauteng you can see where the individual icons are situated. Zoom further in on the POI with a number inside, e.g. in this case there are 17 locations around Pta/Jhb -and you will start seeing individual storage locations. (Bryton's in the East Rand - close to airport - and Storage Guru in Pretoria both were highly recommended by friends that have used them).

2. The alternative is to use the "advanced search" function on the T4A website: https://tracks4africa.co.za/

You can then select the country, then the region, and at the bottom, select the category vehicle storage. You will get a list of facilities that are on the T4A map - it does not indicate the location like the trip planner does, so I prefer using the Trip Planner.

If any of our members know of other facilities not on the T4A map, please feel free to pop a mail to new...@tracks4africa.co.za and we will add them too.

Hi Knut, Dirk, Lizette and all,

There is a new storage concept growing rapidly in South Africa and may well meet your needs. Flexible storage space has the benefit of being contracted online and all aspects of access and the like being managed through the app.

This is best described by the GM, below:

Flexistore offers the ability to conclude a contract for a self-storage unit (from one cubic meter to much larger units) all online and in a matter of minutes.  Unlike other self-storage providers we give immediate approval and access to customers who have signed up and from whom the first month's rent has been taken.  Uniquely customers subscribe using a debit or credit card.  Contracts are month to month and just 14 days' notice is required ahead of a monthly renewal date, to cancel the contract.

And none of that is the cool part!  Access to our facilities and to the storage units is all managed with the Flexistore app.  There are no padlocks required and key management is digital - meaning access can be shared simply by emailing an access invitation.  This shared access can be limited to a time period and withdrawn all in the app.  Our facilities are in secure buildings with 24/7 on site security and most of the facilities provide access to Flexistore customers 24/7/365.

We have facilities Johannesburg, Cape Town and Mbombela and many more will be added in 2026.  (At present the Cape facilities are just about completely full!). Our customers services WhatsApp line is on the website or our customers services team answer calls during office hours on 021 4900922.

Best Regards
Adam
