We are thinking of doing this route at the end of August with a Ford Ranger 4x4 and a camping trailer.
Comments on various sites seem to advise strict avoidance, especially for solo travel.
Can anyone give recent experience on the route please.

If you refer to Route05 via South Luangwa and via the Muchinga escarpment pass then I would be cautious. I received word this morning that the pass was opened or improved again, but there are some tight turns and reversing with a trailer will be problematic.  I suppose coming down will be easier. But it may make for a good fireside story afterwards.

Cutting trees in the area is a big no-no. Some groups tried this to create space and was promptly stopped by the locals.

Having said this, there would help at hand if you are really in a tight spot.

I am asking the tour guide that contacted me to give his opinion and will revert.

Kind Regards

Johann

I just got word from the tour guide. He says they stopped allowing trailers on that particular tour because of that pass.

The problem is that washouts form and then the track zigzag down the escarpment with very tight turns. They had to cut trees to come down but like I said that is not allowed. If you start coming down you are commited though.

If you have a short rig, maybe but there is a fine line between adventure and dissaster.

Kind Regards

Oh well. Discretion is definitely the better part. Thanks for your guidance.

I've been wanting to go to Luangwa since I was a boy in Livingstone in the sixties, so will take the southern route to make sure I get back. And probably go again.

Kind regards,

Paul
