Botswana 80 kmh Stickers for SA Travellers

Good morning all

We had a query last week on an SA based WhatsApp off-road caravanning group about a "new law" in Botswana requiring our SA trailers to have an 80 kmph sticker & that this is a new enforced speed limit for vehicles towing trailers.

I have been following a discussion on the DriveBots Facebook group about this but there are soooo many varying opinions that it's more confusing than helpful! (I've attached a couple of screenshots posted in the discussion which I have highlighted.)

From what I can make out is this is a rule for local Botswana travellers as the first screenshot mentions having this next to the BW country sticker, which is surely not applicable to SA travellers??

Can anyone give us recent, definitive feedback on whether this is true or not?

Hallo Dee and Gavin,

As you saw from the FB group, there is no definite answer about this - someone was trying to get hold of the Tourism Association for an answer.

It seems that the "new" rule came into effect some time ago already, in 2017 with an update to the 2003 road law. However, from what we could gather, the 80km per hour sticker is only relevant to "heavy" caravans and trailers, weighing more than 750kg. I.e. you would also need a EB licence (old Code 10) in order to tow that caravan.

It seems that about a month ago, suddenly tourists were being fined for not displaying this 80km/hr sticker - it lasted for about a week, and all around Martin's Drift border post. Since then the comments have died down so no one knows if the "record was set straight" w.r.t. which vehicles should have these stickers, and which not. 

The sticker is quite easy to get, and there is a company in Pretoria that will make the official version in both magnet and sticker form: https://web.facebook.com/p/Signage-Studio-Pty-Ltd-100090483562207/ - it may be easier to just get one, and be done with it!
