Do you mean what version does Ubuntu 14 have? Or what version works on
Ubuntu 14?

That is what version works on Ubuntu 14?
I know tmux 2.3. Is this correct?

I think Ubuntu 14 comes with tmux 2.3.

You can check with: tmux -V

But you can build any later tmux version yourself and it will work.

I'm sorry to ask you again, but you're saying it's up to 2.3 in ubuntu14, right?

If I just do an apt package downlad, it's 2.3? I'm so scared. I thought I'd make an error if I did the high version of tar.

Hello,

I'm assuming that you mean Ubuntu 14.04 (14.04.5?). It is a bit strange choice
because this version of Ubuntu is not (actively) supported any more. Could you
consider to use Ubuntu 16.04 or even Ubuntu 18.04? There is official way to
upgrade the Ubuntu from one LTS version to another.

> If I just do an apt package downlad, it's 2.3?

You may check the version using https://packages.ubuntu.com site, but as
Ubuntu 14 is not supported any more (neither 14.04 nor 14.10) I don't know
simple way to figure out what version is available for Ubuntu 14

> I'm so scared. I thought I'd make an error if I did the high version of tar.

I'm don't get how version of tar is related to tmux version. You might face
troubles if you decide compile new tmux on your own in Ubuntu 14 because the
build tools may be a bit old ones. If you have option I would suggest to
install new version of Ubuntu (18.04 if you prefer LTS or 19.04 or 19.10 if
you an experienced enough user).

Hi there ...

the very old Ubuntu 14.04 comes with very old tmux:

$ apt-cache show tmux | grep -e Package -e Version
Package: tmux
Version: 1.8-5

While it is possible to compile latest tmux from the
sources, you really should update your base system.
(And maybe then compile tmux yourself as even 18.04
only comes with tmux 2.6.)

To compile tmux, all you need is a compiler (obvious)
and having the needed dev-packages installed. In case
./configure fails complaining about a missing library,
make sure to have both, the library and its *-dev pa-
ckage, installed.
