subscribing to tmux-users - no confirmation url

i had sent an email to the subscription address -
but the "confirmation url" isn't really there:

In order for us to complete the request, please reply
to this email or visit the following confirmation URL:
https://groups.google.com/group/tmux-users/subscribe

at this address you get the web interface to the list with the usual
"tmux users mailing list, post by email to tmux-...@googlegroups.com"

but.. how to subscribe to this list and
receive messages via email properly?

or is this a list which you can only
read through a web interface or
via a gated newsgroup on gmane, ie
gmane.comp.terminal-emulators.tmux.user ?

You can definitely get everything by email, but I don't know how to subscribe anymore. IIRC maybe you need a Google account now and do it from the Google Groups page?

When you visit that confirmation URL and you are logged in to your Google account, you should have a 'My membership settings' on the left toolbar, from there you can choose which email address to have the emails sent to.

well, i do have a google account and
so all mails could go to my cellphone.
but that's not where i want them at all.

i cannot edit on my smartphone as it
simply is too small and i cannot operate
virtual keyboard with only one finger.

so i want thoe mails sent outside of my
google mailsbox - and i will reply from there.

anyway, i have figure it out now:
the reply to my subscription mail
did not have a confirmation link
in the body, but an ID in the SUBJECT!

so all that was necessary was a reply
to that mail, keeping that subject line
(with the usual "Re:" before that).

to sum this up.. subscription to this list
just needs an email sent like this:

echo subscribe | mail -s subscribe \
tmux-users...@googlegroups.com

maybe even the word "subscribe" is neither
required in the subject line nore the body.
in that case you could leave these out, too:

echo | mail tmux-users...@googlegroups.com

of course you sending address should be set correctly.

the resulting mail should look like this then:

From: YOU <youraddress>
To: tmux-...@googlegroups.com
Subject: whatever

the resulting email then looked like this:

From: tmux-users <tmux-users...@googlegroups.com>
Date: Sat, 21 Nov 2020 12:02:22 +0000
To: YOURADDRESS
Subject: Join request for tmux-users [{ABCDEFGH-01234567890}]

Hello YOURADDRESS,

We received your request to join tmux-users. In order
for us to complete the request, please reply to this
email or visit the following confirmation URL:

so.. just send an empty reply with
"Subject Re: ORIGINALSUBJECT"
that should suffice as confirmation.

i definitely overlooked that ID there
because i am so much used to URLs
in the body of such mails.
oh, well, live and learn. ;-)

yep.. there they are: two gmail addresses. but i can only choose those.
i could not simply add another address and chose that for subscription.
but that makes kinda sense. adding any addresses without any confirmation
would allow anyone to subscribe and unsubscribe anyone anyone else easily.

in the end the confirmation needed was already in the subject line - an ID.
replying to the email, keeping the "Re: $OLDSUBJECT" was the thing to do. :)

next problem: how to get rid of all those quoted mailing list signatures.
my solution:
search for "-- $" (sigdashes at end of line) and "dG".
and that's exactly why i want my email at my account:
for using my editor for editing my messages yes, vim. :-)
(i wouldnt want to do editing in a browser. too complicated.)
