When I'm preparing my students for IB math exams, I really need to be able to show them what exactly what features of the calculator will be unavailable when the calculators are in PTT mode and to do example problems with only the allowed features. It's easy to see the list of things on the notification screen when the calculator is powered on, but that does not really help kids understand exactly what things like "Limit geometry functions" means. (We've moved to the CX-II CAS, which means we have to lock out the CAS functions, too.)

Does anyone know a way to emulate PTT on the teacher software? If this is not possible, I'd like to make that feature request. I've been wishing for this ability for years.

Also, we discovered an issue on the CX-II CAS in PTT. When the polynomial tools are enabled, choosing Real Roots of Polynomial (which is not grayed out) gives an error saying it's not allowed. Only the first "Find Roots of Polynomial" command still works. This was very frustrating for students.

Re: “…what features of the calculator will be unavailable when the calculators are in PTT mode …”

Here’s a thought:

In the Navigator software (hope you have the entire Navigator system) you can set up a Press-to-Test situation (share the configuration screen with students and provide an explanation of what each setting restricts). Then send the setup to the class (‘Enable PTT’) and make one student’s device the Live Presenter to show what happens on the handheld when this setup is active. You can disable PTT using Navigator as well.

Note that ‘Press-to-Test’ is customizable so there is not really a ‘standard’ setup unless you count disabling as much as possible (TI Factory Default Configuration):

If you are using the Premium Teacher Software (I assume it’s still a free upgrade) you can activate/deactivate the entire Navigator subsystem using the top item on the Window menu. Even if you do not have the Navigator hardware, the PTT setup screen is a helpful summary of the restrictions.

I am not sure about the IB Exam, however for NYS only criteria is no communication and no access to files/programs.  We are not required to limit anything else, so we uncheck everything else.  This may mean you would only have to check "Disable CAS".  Not sure about anything else on your IB exam.

I found this:

  Quote
TI Nspire “Press to Test” configurations.
Note: Candidates must upgrade their Nspire to the latest operating system to use the “Press to Test”
properly. Nspires which have not been updated and put into the correct “Press to Test” mode are not
allowed in the examinations. Further details about “Press to Test” can be found at the end of this
document and on the TI website. Older versions may need two upgrades to enable the correct “Press to
Test” mode.
The following options in “Press to Test” mode must be ticked and therefore blocked.
 Limit geometry functions
 Disable function and conic grab and move
 Disable vector functions, including eigenvectors and eigenvalues
 Disable “isPrime” function
 Disable differential equation graphing
 Disable 3D graphing
 Disable implicit graphing, conic templates, conic analysis, and geometric conics
The following options in “Press to Test” mode must be unticked and therefore allowed.
 Disable inequality graphing
 Limit trigonometric functions
 Disable logbx template and summation functions
 Disable Polynomial Root Finder and Simultaneous Equation Solver

Also, use the software to set this up. If you don’t have it, you can use the trial license.

To clarify: I know how to set the calculator up in Press-To-Test mode, how to send the settings to another calculator, how to reset PTT between tests, and how to take them out of PTT. Our school first bought TI-nspires when they had click wheels and interchangeable face plates. I know how to show the kids the list of things that are checked and unchecked, and I am always able to locate the most current set of restrictions that IB requires for exams.

The reason that I continue to want the teacher software to be able to emulate PTT is that saying "geometry functions are limited" is not the same as letting kids see that they can still use the Geometry > Points & Lines > Intersection Point(s) command, but not the Geometry > Measurement tools to get an angle measure. (I only know this for sure because I just tried it on a handheld.) When we're preparing for a test and someone asks if a particular feature is allowed, there is no quick way to check that on screen. It requires putting a handheld into that mode, waiting for it to restart, and then trying the particular command.

In response to John's suggestion about using a student calculator as a presenter, we don't actually have the Navigator software, so unfortunately that's not an option for us. (It does seem like a good solution, but not cost-effective for this purpose. It also doesn't address the need to check on the fly.) I could also put the calculator up on screen using a document camera, but that's less clear and still requires the setup time.

Thanks for trying to help, but it looks like I am just out of luck until/unless TI decides to add this feature to a future version of the teacher software.

As a fellow IB teacher, I 100% understand and support this. Perhaps if we both email Gosia Brothers.

We don't even have the option of US ng navigator here, as we use the CX II-T calc.

All,

One does not need to have TI-Navigator to use the Live Presenter functionality.

You can simply use the TI-Nspire Premium Teacher software:

·        Launch the teacher software,

·        Connect your handheld to the computer,

·        Go to Content Tab,

·        Select your handheld,

·        Right click and select Live Presenter

You are now ready to use your handheld to demonstrate the PTT functionality:

Hope this helps and addresses your needs. Please let me know,

Gosia Brothers

Re: One does not need to have TI-Navigator to use the Live Presenter functionality.

And it works with CX II. If you upgrade to the Premium Teacher Software, then the Navigator components are included for free. See the Window menu to enable Navigator.

That was magical! The first time I tried I didn't go to the right place, but your instructions were perfect. Thanks so much.
