Out on the raw world of search finding out what TiddlyWiki is you hit a problem. TWC & TW5 are hard to tell apart. It creates much confusion for newbies.

Unless TW "X" is FULLY downwards compatible with TW5 please use a totally DIFFERENT name.

Premature thoughts.

Is it time to talk about the feature requests for TWX already? Can I start with
- Ability to built it from scratch with user preferences. Like, may be I do not need wikiparser rules, may be i just want markdown as my default. May be I do not need the extra themes and fold all button or recent tab in sidebar and palettes.
- If not that, at least freedom to remove stuff that is not necessary to individuals.
- Ability to modify .txt and .md files in-place.
- And finally, little ambitious but still, an opt-out option with danger warnings for the No-JS rule

Hi Riz

Interesting. I think that all of those requests could actually be handled within TW5 without breaking backwards compatibility (in particular it wouldn’t be much work for anyone interested to explore building their own custom core).

The sorts of things I’m thinking of for a subsequent version that didn’t retain backwards compatibility are at a more fundamental level: rethinking the structure of a tiddler, and how variables and the rendering process works. For me, the trouble is that TW5 evolved organically: when I started it I wasn’t even sure that I could achieve what I was setting out to do. Thus, there are lots of quite prominent features that were introduced early on and that I would now handle differently (eg, the fact there is a difference between transclusion and the view widget, or the presence of text substitution macros which I now think was a mistake).

Best wishes

Jeremy.

Hi TiddlyTweeter,

FWIW, I think there should at least be a TW5 vs. TWC tiddler on tiddlywiki.com,
seeing how much the two are being used, esp. in the groups.

best -tb

Right. I hadn't thought of that route.

It makes a lot of sense to me to help new users understand the differences between TWC & TW5.

I do think "how  to start using TW?" is a broad issue of interest & relevance. Whilst "saving" is one major issue, especially at the moment (albeit we have multiple ways forward), "TWC v. TW5" is another that is also still in play.

Best wishes
Josiah
