[TW5] render local pdf file within tiddler

Hello,

I'd like to embed a rendering of a locally stored pdf file directly into a tiddler.

There are numerous examples of how to do this in the forum archive, but none work for me (they do work for internet URLs).

Just to clarify.

• The file "test.pdf" is in a local folder of my hard drive  e.g. "C:\folder1\folder2\test.pdf"
• I'd like the content of "test.pdf" to be rendered in a tiddler, but not stored in a tiddler
• The Adobe plugin for Firefox is installed and activated
• A tiddler containing "[ext[link|test.pdf]]" will open and render the pdf file in a new tab when link is clicked (so the plugin is working)
• Using TW 5.1.9 or TW 5.1.10-pre
• "test.pdf" will always be a single page vector based image, so preferably I can control the size of the rendered image (preserving the aspect ratio)

Thanks for the link. That was one of the first things I tried, but only on TW 5.1.10-pre. I blame myself (must have latest version syndrome). I suppose if it really doesn't work on TW 5.1.10-pre then it's worth knowing for JR.

Thanks for the link. I was using the wrong TW version (see above).

The re-sizing seems to work okay transcluding with [img width=400 height=400 [New Tiddler]].

No with "Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.11" activated
Yes with "PDF-XChange Viewer Netscape Gecko Plugin" activated (and Adobe disabled)

but using the _canonical_uri method (tb above) a local pdf file will render with either the Adobe or PDF-XChange plugins on TW5.1.9, but neither on TW5.1.10-pre.

I'm using FF 41.0.

The first issue doesn't affect me because I only use a local TW and it seems to be plugin related. If the second issue (TW5.1.10-pre) is a real issue (i.e. if other people have the same problem) then maybe some new behavior has crept in to 5.1.10-pre.

There hasn't been any changes that would obviously impact the display of external PDFs. I can't duplicate the problem; PDFs displayed via _canonical_uri work fine in 5.1.10-prerelease in Firefox on my Mac.

I wonder if it's worth preparing a minimal test case that you can post to TiddlySpot? It would be good to track down the issue in case it affects others.

I tested pdfs both online and local in that version and they work fine for me.
Doesn't Firefox natively render PDF or do you prefer those alternative programs?

If you do, did you try reinstalling them?

Hello Jeremy and tb,

Thank you both for testing 5.1.10-prerelease on your computers.

The issue is now resolved by disabling both the Firefox pdf plugins and then following the instructions under this heading

"If PDF files are downloaded instead of displayed, try these solutions"

at this address  https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/view-pdf-files-firefox-without-downloading-them

...And then in Firefox doing: Tools -> Options -> Applications and setting the PDF "Content Type" "Action" to "Preview in Firefox" from the drop-down list

@tb, I've no preference for these plugins over the native Firefox rendering, but I probably should have paid more attention when installing the viewer software (Adobe and PDF-XChange) and not allowed them to install Firefox plugins. Hopefully I'll remember next time.
