I'm a newbie and only an occassional dabbler at TiddlyWiki, so please bear with me.

I see that if I rename a Tiddler that TW conveniently offers to rename entries in the Lists or Tags fields of other Tiddlers for me.

But if I've used the Tiddler name in the text of another Tiddler -- which I do a lot -- those embedded links do not get updated.

There's probably some easy way around this, but please keep in mind I'm not even sure how a TW plugin works or how to use them.

Thanks in advance!

This is a weakness in the TW design. The title field is overworked, being used for 3 different functions.

Rather than changing all your links, it's better to  pick a reasonably unique and accurate title, and sticking with it.

If it's important to you to change how a link displays, consider using PMario's uni-link (https://wikilabs.github.io/editions/uni-link/) . It will let your links use the "description" field for display. The description field can be changed at any time without effecting linking.

To import the plugin, go to the control panel (https://wikilabs.github.io/editions/uni-link/#%24%3A%2FControlPanel) and open the plugins tab. Drag the uni-link over to your TW file. A green bar should appear. When it does, drop. A tiddler is created for importing. Click on "import". Then save your TW file and reload (the new plugin doesn't take effect until after reload).

Be sure to make a back-up of your TW file before doing this, of course.

Good luck!

Creating good tiddler titles is important and you should take some time, to make them meaningful. It pays off in the future!

You may have a short look at the intro video, which shows the possibilities. https://youtu.be/V9l-vipAoNw

Importing a plugin is relatively easy:

First: BACKUP your existing TW --- BACKUP BACKUP !!!

a) Open your TW in a browser WINDOW
b) Open this link https://wikilabs.github.io/editions/uni-link/#GettingStarted  in  a second browser window.
     - scroll down to "Installation"

Having the browser windows Side by Side works best

 - Now drag the link from TW b) onto your TW in a)
 - There should be an Import dialog
 - Import the the plugin
 - Save and Reload!     <- Important

It should work now.

have fun!

I struggle with some of these concepts :-) ...so let me see if I get it.

The strategy is to pick a modest Tiddler title that stays permanent, and then create a Caption that serves as a "display title"...such that when you refer to [[short title]] in a Tiddler, the display is the "caption" and not the "short title".

The "caption" can change as the content of the Tiddler changes and hence you want to update the way you refer to the Tiddler to reflect the new content.

I tried it and got the [[short title]] and "caption" part to work. I even updated the "caption" in the source Tiddler and links in other Tiddlers I created using [[short title]] reflected the change in the caption.

I never got the alias thing to work and don't really understand it...and didn't really pursue the subtitle thing as I didn't think I needed to use either of those at the moment.

I can see how this would work. As I think you pointed out, it's not really as desirable as changing the Tiddler title directly. Because even though your changing the displayed title, you now have to keep track of the fact that the actual title and the displayed title are different.

I'll keep working at this and see how it goes. In my limited prior experience with Wiki's I was using to collect reference data and notes related to work, I found that building a knowledge repository was evolutionary and I often wound up re-organizing material and morphing the content and title of Wiki entries as my understanding of a topic changed and the grouping of the knowledge contained changed also (e.g., splitting a topic that had grown to have too many dimensions to adhere to the spirit of a Tiddler).

I'm not sure how much of a problem this might be. I'll just have to work with TiddlyWiki some more and see how it goes.

Thank you for you help!
