Hi all

I am starting a modest index of TiddlyWiki tools here: https://dynalist.io/d/zUP-nIWu2FFoXH-oM7L7d9DM. To paraphrase Troy McClure, "You might remember me from such cult classics as TiddlyVault and TiddlyWiki for the rest of us." This project won't be as fancy as those. I am doing this for my own benefit, but I am making it available for anyone who wants to bookmark it. I am using Dynalist rather than TiddlyWiki since Dynalist is faster for creating multilevel outlines that collapse and expand.

I am open to anyone sending me - by private message, not as a reply here - links to their themes, adaptations, tools (plugins and macros and ui tweaks), how to tutorials, and stuff you used TW for. I will be super busy for the next month or so, including 6 days of traveling back to Mexico, so this will be a slow effort for now. Please be patient. Also, if it is really technical stuff only for the most advanced, I might not include it or I might only paste the links into a 'Developers only' category. I am looking more for stuff tailored to newbies or to modestly skilled tweakers and creators like me.

I am also looking for things I remember but can't find my links to - the old glass theme someone made, some of the very first stuff matabele did, experiments with presentations and slideshows, various task management / GTD adaptations and experiments...

Thanks in advance for anyone who helps me out.

Hello Dave,

read this post today. When you want you can include Spilot4TW (https://www.quaraman.de/tw/pilot.html) .

A programming language that can be included as Tiddlywiki plugin.

Kind regards

ALREADY this thread shows the NEED for that.

Things I noticed ...

1 - despite being an Avid Reader of GG your list includes stuff I never ever heard of before. It also has things that the Reddit list doesn't have.

2 - a couple of items you list I am familiar with have been improved via GG discussions. Can you clarify if you only take submissions from original authors? Or can you cope with later tweakings?

Best wishes
Josiah

Hi Josiah,

After seeing all the cool stuff coming out in what seems to be a Tiddlywiki renaissance in the last couple of months, I figured it was time to get more organized, and let others benefit from it, too.

I don't have any set rules or procedures for this, and I don't vouch for any of these. I am just listing things I know of because I saved links long ago or because I can find links on tiddlywiki.com, the Google group, or the Reddit links.

On the one hand, I don't want to have twelve links for nearly identical things. That would be off-putting for new users just looking for a calendar or whatnot. On the other hand, sometimes when there are two different ways to do something like a left hand menu, etc, it is good to have an index so someone with some know how can compare them and swipe the best bits of each.

I will gladly ADD anything anyone gives me, especially if they indicate the category it belongs to, and a one line description if there is none in the resource itself. Regarding REPLACEMENTS or REMOVALS from the list (now you've got ME doing caps...sigh...), I would be open to these changes:

1. A user saying, "Item X on your list is mine, please remove it / replace it with Y because it is outdated or doesn't work"
2. Several members of the community agreeing that a certain item is the better version and should get a star next to it
3. Several recognized members of the community agreeing that item X is harmful as it stands and should be removed
4. If you or anyone sends me an explanation of how something was improved (second version) and should be replaced, you can link me to the relevant Google Groups discussion
5. Anything Jeremy Ruston or Eric Schulman recommend.

Blessings,

Hi Dave

It is updated, thanks for the hint.

Hi Josiah

As a present to my vigilant readers I have added an easter egg. There is an early version of an upcoming new plugin. Feel free to test and comment :–)
As usual: make a backup first, no warranties attached. Official release will follow sooner or later.

Furthermore, there is a small updat to the HarveyBalls plugin – one variant takes on the colour of the surrounding text now.

That’s all, folks! Cheers,
Thomas

Hi everyone

I was able to add a number of new entries to my TiddlyWiki toolmap tonight (https://dynalist.io/d/zUP-nIWu2FFoXH-oM7L7d9DM). There are now over 200 entries, and the categories keep evolving. A big thanks to everyone who has created all these gems.

And I want to express my awe and admiration of the people who maintain the TW5 Reddit indexes (https://www.reddit.com/r/TiddlyWiki5/wiki/index). What a goldmine. Had I remembered their indexes when I started this project, I would have reached out to them to offer my project as a stepping stone for rearranging their links and maintain them there. In fact, while I would prefer to do my toolmap on Dynalist for the ease of writing and editing, I would still be happy for my toolmap to be seen as an initial rough draft, and for the subreddit indexes to be the go-to site for the finished product, if its maintainers are open to that.

There has been talk in the past of 'TiddlyWiki evangelism'. I hope this toolmap is useful to the community for that purpose, to show people the many things they can do with TiddlyWiki with a little learning and experimenting.

Finally, this project has already been many things for me: A walk down memory lane, rediscovering old forgotten sites and tools. A discovery of many sites I had never seen before. A discovery of many tools I didn't know existed. An enjoyable distraction from the many things I really should be doing. Keep the private emails coming with additional links. And when you create new stuff, remember to email me with that, too. I plan to get back to this list in February after we get back to Mexico and I can get caught up with work I need to do there.

Blessings

Dave

Thanks Dave, I found some useful tidbits among these.

This has the flavor of the many other, curated 'awesome-lists'. If your toolmap were to become an awesome-tiddlywiki github page it might be easier for those learning about TiddlyWiki to find and eager TW users to contribute to.

There was some effort in the past to auto-publish TW5 content as GitHub pages, mentioned here as recently as last November, that could perhaps be leveraged. I don't know if those would help to make your toolmap both awesome and TiddlyWiki-based while remaining free and not a maintenance headache.

Thanks again for the effort!

Ciao Dave

Like the Reddit Effort to list plugins... https://www.reddit.com/r/TiddlyWiki5/wiki/pluginsandresources

... you are illustrating the NEED for TiddlyWiki to CENTRALISE plugins. FOR TIDDLYWIKI to get USED MORE. A huge amount of its utility is in PLUGINS. They are still second-class citizens at the moment. They should not be.

The single issue that you have, as one person, is that you can't have knowledge of all the intricacies that come up.

I can tell you that in some cases (no names) you posted links that were already updated in discussions in GG.

I think this a serious issue. One that your work illustrates. Your work REALLY HELPS.

In the longer term we need a better solution.

Erwan did make a harvester that worked IF you signed up to it: https://tiddlywiki.com/#TWCommunitySearch. It wasn't used much. Why not? Maybe people don't even know it exists? Same problem.

MY opinion on this is that Plugins SHOULD BROADCAST their existence. And that some system pick them up.

It would be a hell of a lot easier in the end.

Just thoughts

Twederation is a pipe dream for this. Its not ready.

IMO, I think that a plugin architecture could build in "Announcement" that is neutral on its specific sponsor.

The point is to GET ON WITH IT before we all expire.

HI Dave.
It is nice that you are compiling such a list. I do think that it is a total mess how you find plugins. My wiki would not be the same without the plugin I use. When I show other people TW I Try not to show them the vanilla one, because its a shadow of my wiki with the useful/essential plugins.

My dream would be that there, like for the official plugins, would be a community plugin list, in the get more plugins/controlpanel.

Ciao David

That is growing into a seriously useful repository of links to NEEDED THINGS.

FYI, in the last week I used it four times to more quickly find links useful for TW stuff relevant to questions on Twitter.

I'm hoping that the penny-will-drop and that we can move on to a place where such a list can be auto-generated by some enhancement to the plugin architecture such that a plugin announces itself to some aggregations system. Its a lot of work for one person to do all this manually.

Erwan developed a solution towards that but its not used much.

I seriously believe that TW's uptake is being damaged by lack of CENTRAL recording of published plugins.

Best wishes

Hi Dave,

maybe the following is relevant for your TiddlyWiki tools:

this link https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/TiddlyWiki/dr0trcLvbxo leads to a conversation "auto embed images from local folder into tiddler" with an attachment with a json tiddler.

It is a tool to import huge amounts of external links to pdfs in a relative path folder.

I have used it to catalogue huge libraries. I regard it as a game changer.

Kudos to the author and gratitude to you for the tools collection.

Respectfully,

Pit.W

Hello David,

did you get my mail (sent about 3 weeks ago)?

I am not sure, if you got it, because it is not in my "sent"- folder and you didn't answer yet.
It was about my wiki http://surya-diy.tiddlyspot.com.

Have a nice day! Surya

Note that on portrait screens your wiki can squash the right menu.

Ask if you need pointers to mobile-friendly layouts. Well ... David's list probably already has them! :-)

Hi Josiah,

Ask if you need pointers to mobile-friendly layouts.

Yes please :-)))

I didn't notice that on my mobiles. But noticed, that the "Schön, dass Du zu meiner Seite gefunden hast :-)" on the first tiddler is squashed. But everything else seemed to me to be normal.

But of course I'd like to have it on all mobiles readable :-)

Thanks for your advice and proposal!, Surya

Hi Surya

No, I did not receive an email from you. I just added your site to the section "Personal websites (examples)"

Blessings!

Try this first: http://j.d.simplemobile.tiddlyspot.com/

If no go then the sophisticated stuff of: https://tid.li/tw5/test/bricks.html

BTW, both were on David's list :-)

Hi Pit W

Sorry I missed this somehow. I just added it to the Images, icons, emojis section. Thanks for this!

@David:
Thanks :-))
It is still shown at the section Business - examples of business websites. My wiki is not commercial / business!!! I don't sell anything there. Please move that.
In this wiki there are two sections.
1) Help for TW in german. This help is for real "bloody" TW-beginners. But if I have had it at the beginning, it would have saved me weeks of work.
2) Recipes, infos, tutorials and so on for producing body-hygiene-products and cleansing-products without palmoil.

If you want I could describe the wiki in german for your dynalist, because the whole wiki is in german.

@Josiah:
Hmm, the first one http://j.d.simplemobile.tiddlyspot.com/ I couldn't import into my wiki. Don't know why...
I'll try it with the second one.

Hello Josiah,

unfortunately I couldn't import the first one (http://j.d.simplemobile.tiddlyspot.com/). I tried it several times. It always imported "untitled" and the plugin-content was empty.

And the second one (https://tid.li/tw5/test/bricks.html) I really don't understand. I don't understand, how I could make my wiki mobile-friendly with that.

But nevertheless thanks and have a good night :-) Surya

Hi Surya. I'm sorry you're having trouble installing the below plugin. Does the same thing happen when you try to install other plugins? I don't know about other browsers, but drag-and-drop in Chrome still works for me.

Hello JD,

no, strangely, this one (http://j.d.simplemobile.tiddlyspot.com/) was since now the only one, which didn't wanted to be imported into my wikis (all TW5, this simplemobile-plugin I wanted to import into a TW5-tiddlyspot-wiki)- except of course the ones made for TWClassic.
I use Pale Moon Browser and I tried to import it by drag'n'drop.

Hi David,

you can add following plugins :

https://quaraman.de/tw/checklistbox.html

A checklistbox widget that can save the value in a list field.

https://quaraman.de/tw/after.html

a timer/countdown plugin that renders the body after every refresh.

https://quaraman.de/tw/mforth.html

a forth like language as macro

https://quaraman.de/tw/datetimepicker.html

a date/time or both picker and saver as field value.

thanks for that list.

kind regards
QuaraMan

Thanks QuaraMan! Just added them. mforth went to advanced/developer. The others to checkbox and to calendars, time, etc. Blessings

Not sure what has happened in the last year but when I click on this link on my iPhone it crashes the google browser. That may be a dynalink problem? Haven’t tried it on a desktop. I have a funny feeling I did try in another iOS browser with same result. (apparently they are all the same - have the same engine?)

Thanks for the quick replies. I just opened the link in safari and no problem but it seems any link from google groups crashes the app so nothing to do with dynalist.

I’m not sure how to find the last update so I hope it’s not a silly question to ask if this is still being updated given that this group post hasn’t been updated for a while.

I update it as I find new itemshere or people send me stuff by email. I updated it this week with items from Shiraz and Yazd. So it is not an inactive site. Sorry, I am forgetful about changing the last updated date...
