Dear all,

I've been getting this alert (Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'removeChild' of null) fairly frequently lately, usually (always?) while trying to saving edits to a tiddler. Since auto-save is generally on, I've usually just re-loaded (sometimes with browser reboot) and gone forward. At this point, though, I worry whether there could be some erosion of the integrity of the file if I don't track it down...

I've been pruning plugins hoping to isolate the suspect, but I'm now down to a set of plugins that seems pretty core to the functions I need. The error is not easily reproducible (only happens once or twice in a day of intensive editing, and without any common evident factor beyond "while saving"), so I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot as I would if it happened reliably (on a certain tiddler, or on tiddlers with some tag, tiddlers with particular kind of macros, etc).

Any hints about what's a likely culprit, or what *kind* of thing to focus on to isolate the cause? It's way too late to reconstruct from some remote pre-error version in my tiddlyspot backups... But should I worry that continued use of this wiki means risking more significant corruption from which it would be hard to recover?

Here's a list of currently active plugins, in case anything sticks out as relevant (assuming that currently disabled ones can't account for the problem):

springer,

The next time you encounter this problem, right-click on the page -> Inspect element -> Console tab: here you can trace which plugin caused the problem. Take a screenshot of it and upload it here so I can help.

Will do. Thanks for the tip.

(Now it'll be like when you drive the car to the mechanic and the car refuses to demonstrate that random sound of doom...)

springer,

I don't know if the bug still occurs, but if so, try updating my plugin as it also caused RSOD (although it did conflict with the CodeMirror plugin that you don't have installed).

Thanks bimlas! I haven't had the error since my post, perhaps because I did find a couple more plugins to take out of my active set. But it can't hurt to makes updates where possible.

Bimlas and all, Here's a screenshot of part of the console view (with lots of repetitions of the same, below this part).

It was quiet for a long time, then seemed to come back after I re-enabled tobibeer's "Show a tiddler preview when hovering internal links" plugin. But not positive it's that, or perhaps it's the unusual product of multiple plugins...

Many thanks for any insight you can offer!

springer,

Sorry for the late reply.

I tried to install Tobias Beer's Preview plugin (http://tobibeer.github.io/tw5-plugins/#preview) on the latest TiddlyWiki, but I think I omitted some settings because it didn't look quite as it did in the demo. Anyway, I tried to bring up the error but failed. As you write, it probably conflicts with one of the plugins, but I can't help finding it. Based on the error message, this may be a plugin that modifies the appearance dinamically, such as "Highlight searched text". Try to observe what you did before the error message appeared.

springer,

Is RSOD still happening? If so, try the prerelease version of Highlight Searched Text! (sending it attached)

I'm not sure, but I think Highlight.js tried to delete previous highlights, but they no longer always existed after editing, so it caused an RSOD. Before editing the tiddler or creating a new tiddler, I delete the current highlights to prevent RSOD from happening.

EDIT:

Added another fix.
