Hi,

I last used my wiki this morning but when I came to open it again this evening, there is just a blank screen with no sidebar etc.

I've never seen this before and at a loss as to what it might be.

I'm using PMario's automatic backups and there are 3 backups from this morning at 7:00, 7:31 & 7:40.

The first 2 open as normal and the last one opens to the same blank screen as the main wiki.

It's the same result in Chrome (as well as FireFox)

I haven't lost any data (I do additional backups as well as the automatic ones) but it's a bit worrying and it would be good to know how to recover it if it was necessary.

Any ideas as to what might have caused it?

Regards
Jon

I've noticed that the files that open show as: filename.html#:
whilst those that don't show as: filname.html

Is it possible that you closed down your browser or computer before the last save had completed?

Perhaps that's what happenned, I don't know.

I'm in and out of it all the time and I didn't think I'd done anything differently.

I suppose the file is corrupt then and it's just a question of having a reliable backup to fall back to...?

You could look at the file in a file explorer. If the size is less than 2 megs, then you almost certainly have a corrupt file.

Hi Mark,

These are the sizes of file from the backup folder:

22/10/19      21:52      19,589      (good)
23/10/19      07:31      19,590      (good)
23/10/19      07:40      19,589      (bad)

so the bad one seems to have lost something...

Regards,
Jon

Just noticed the current file is back to 19,589, so reference to smaller size in previous post probably isn't significant.

Maybe the 7:31 added something that created the bad ones?

Maybe, not sure.

It's only the 7:40 file that's bad.

I reverted to one of the good backups and I'm continuing with that now and the file size is 19,589.

Maybe a kb here or there is nothing, apart from a red herring!

With regards to recovery, have you tried importing a tiddly into the blank area? If you are able to import and can interact with the import tiddler and the one you imported it might lead to a path to recovery, reimporting some of the system tiddlers?

Hi,

there isn't actually anything to interact with  - just a completely blank screen.

Press F12 and see if any errors are in the console. Since the file size is almost the same size, try opening it in a text editor and make sure it ends with </body></html> or something like that.

There are no units. If that is 19,589 K, then that is a very large file. It may take a few extra seconds to save when closing out.

Hi Arlen,

The console shows a 'Source Map error' and in a text editor,  the bottom third of the file (using the slider) consists of rows of black 'NUL's all the way to the last line.

So, I think the file would technically be described as 'knackered'!

Hi Mark,

Yes, sorry, Kb or about 19.5MB.
Maybe I need to put it on a diet although it only takes about a second to save (for red tick to grey out again)

Hi,

this happenned again yesterday but fortunately I could rely on Mario's backups to retrieve an up to date copy.

I was using a laptop and would have closed the lid with the browser still open which would be my normal practice (although I appreciate it might not be the best and I have been getting into the habit of closing the browser, or at least the tab with the open wiki)

The other thing is that the battery needs replacing, so whilst unplugged overnight, on this occasion it discharged and rebooted itself once plugged back in, so I suppose that caused the 'crash'

Again, one of the backups was also a blank version - perhaps saved as the power went off.

It would appear that closing the browser tab when finished is the way to avoid this.

Regards
Jon
