create date field and search for tiddlers in date range

Many of my notes (=tiddlers) refer to an event which I would like to note as a key:value pair in order to be able to use it later on, e.g. search for tiddlers that refer to dates in a certain date range (next two weeks, say).

These dates are not identical to any of the default date fields (created, modified). How do I define such a field and how do I use it later on?
