Save icon does not turn red in top menu bar

I have installed the menu bar plugin and I notice that the save icon does not change colour to indicate the fact that there is unsaved work as it does in the right sidebar.

I found this post in the menu bar thread mention the problem:

Is there a setting I'm missing? I have noticed in other editions it does change colour, but I have no idea how to figure out why it works in those and not in mine.

Please let me know if there is more info I should be providing.
