Tiddlywiki Discord Server

Hey all,

A friend and I have recently gotten into utilizing TiddlyWiki for various personal projects, and we realized that there wasn't a Discord server for it, so we made one!

"So what is Discord?" you might ask?

Here's a summary of useful features relevant to those using TiddlyWiki

1. Voice and Text chat
• At it's core, Discord was originally created to replace use of voice chat applications like Skype and Teamspeak for people playing games online
• The voice and text chats are all housed in their own private and free servers, with different "Channels" so you can segment different topics of conversation
2. Custom, private server
• Discord offers free hosting of servers that allow for servers focused on one particular thing (like TiddlyWiki) to be created for communities
  
• Each server is entirely moderated by the server creator
• This means no weird corporate intervention in your community!
3. Feature Rich
• Discord is like many other instant messaging applications with added features (on top of the voice chat additions)
• It allows for peer to peer instant messaging and sharing of information
• No more emojis in your lines of code
• By surrounding your code blocks with ``` on either end, you can preserve the exact formatting as written for your code.
• Normally, Discord allows for shorthand text formatting where you can surround text with *s in order to embolden the text
• @mentions allow you to address a group of people with assigned roles (as determined by the server owner) as well as individuals if you're having a conversation with multiple people. You can just specify that person to give them a notification and highlight the message
• Pinned Messages allow you to "pin" old messages so that they are always visible from the text channel they are pinned in.

In short, Discord comes with all of the niceties of other messaging platforms as well as a plethora of others. I've attached some screenshots so you can get an idea of what it looks like as well.

Hi Reece,

I just joined the server, but I'm completely confused.

There are 14 text channels, that overlap each other quite a bit. ... eg:

How is "css-help" different to "TW5 help" or "general-questions". Same with "html-help" and "TW5 help". ...

There is a "general-chat" and "off-topic" which is the same for me.

What's the difference between TW5 CORNER and TEXT CHANNELS

I think, the whole thing needs to be stripped down quite a bit. I think there is way too much overlap.

Just my thoughts.

Hey Mario!

I've actually segmented the channels in a manner that I think would be useful for specific topics as someone who is pretty new to utilizing TW, CSS and HTML. 

Large discord populations become confusing with multiple people having separate conversations so I thought it might be useful to break it out based on each coding language/approach because information relating to HTML won't really be relevant to someone who is asking about how to use tiddlywiki widgets.

General and off-topic could probably go but I mostly created those off handedly thinking that general would be related to TW and off topic would be like.... what's your favorite ice cream or your favorite ruleset of D&D.

The workshop is supposed to be for specific code assistance. Like someone asking how to format a filter or table for instance. 

The text channels are not for the most part related to TW but the server, except for TW resources but I should probably move that to the TW corner. 

I've been meaning to pin messages of intended use for each channel in each channel's pinned messages but haven't had a ton of time to reformat lately.

I appreciate the feedback, I'll look at reorganizing to segment it a bit better so there's less clutter. If you're ever interested in helping admin you can always let me know here or PM me on discord.

I just joined, thanks for setting up the server. I love the idea!

That said, my first impression was one of being a bit overwhelmed. I feel that you may have done a bit of premature optimization with the channels :). Do you think it would helpful, especially for newcomers, to reduce the number of channels to a minimum (like 3 or 4 of them) until there actually is a noise problem? (Although too much noise would be a great problem to have!).

I'm new to discord but of the many Slack teams I'm on, there are only a couple that could use more channels. Most would benefit from fewer.
