Hello everbody,

I'm using a mindmap tool called Freeplane for knowledge management since some years. Because I don't like some stuff about Freeplane, I'm searching for a alternative and came across TiddlyWiki.

Because I'm loving mindmaps I thought about using TiddlyMap, but as I read through all the posts in this group my feeling is, that most heavy Tiddlywiki users are not using TiddlyMap. What are the reasons for not using TiddlyMap?

Greetings

Forgot to mention that for me the most interesting alternative to TiddlyMap seems to be Stroll, therefore I'm at the point where I'm thinking: TiddlyMap vs. Stroll?

Hi 19y...

TiddlyMap and Stroll are not rivals. Stroll and TiddlyMap are two different kinds of animals. Stroll is not a plugin but is something like an edition. TiddlyMap, on the other hand, is a plugin, so it can be added to any TiddlyWiki file that doesn't have other pieces that conflict with it (as Stroll seems to do). I imagine there are many here using TiddlyMap but just don't mention it. It's a great tool and it is nice to have mind maps in TW.

We did try to integrate TiddlyMap into Stroll, in part because that imitates a feature of Roam Research, which was what we were shooting for, and in part because people were asking for it. But it was hard to do because of the two story rivers, etc. TiddlyMap needs room to breathe in the sidebar, and Stroll was squishing it, and I think there was some other issue, but I forget.

There is a tool called TiddlyRoam, which is basically just TiddlyBlink (a precursor to Stroll) with TiddlyMap added onto it. That is probably what you want.

Drift is similar to Stroll and has some extra features, such as taking tags more into account. I imagine TiddlyMap could be integrated into it.

With my Customizer plugin, it would be possible to create a TiddlyMap-only sidebar, which might make it more prominent. But I haven't had the time or energy to create one myself.

I hope the above helps to give a little context and history. Blessings!

Tony K, did make an effort to use tiddlymap with drift, but that was in an early version of drift.  You can read about it here .

One user in Reddit created some code to make  the tiddlymap appear in the story river instead of the sidebar. If you are interested you can look at this link

Thanks for all your replies!

@Dave Gifford
Great to get a reply from the Stroll creator! Thanks for your work :)
One thing, I'm really curious about is why are you not using tags in Stroll? You mentioned that in a Video with Jeremy Ruston and also here in the google group I think. What alternative to tags are you using? Backlinks only? For example, how do you filter tiddlers if you don't have tags? Would really appreciate it if you could explain that a little bit.

Hey 19!

Every time I have used tags on projects, I have experienced slowdown, since I tend to use a lot of tags.

I use mainly backlinking, and some fields.

See my Documenting TW file for some of the filters I use. https://giffmex.org/gifts/documenting.tw.html

Blessings.

Do you mean slowdown in terms of a lack of responsiveness of your Tiddlywiki (for example you have to wait longer when you a open a tiddler) or slowdown in terms of a slowdown of your workflow in general?
