TiddlyWiki v5.1.23 is nearing release with many exciting updates; see https://tiddlywiki.com/prerelease to try it out. As usual, I’d like to hold a competition to design the banner image that is shown on the splash screen and within the opening HelloThere tiddler.

The rules for the competition are:

* The version number (with the correct punctuation) must be clear and readable even when the banner is shown at a reduced size
* The image must be a PNG, JPEG or SVG of exactly 560x315 pixels
* The bottom 46 pixels will be obscured by the banner text “What’s new in 5.1.23” when it is displayed within HelloThere
* Feel free to enter an updated version of artwork that was a runner-up in a previous competition
* Reply to this message with your entry, or any questions

Here are the posts about previous artwork competitions:

Inspiration might come from some of the new features in v5.1.22, or perhaps reflect something of the uniqueness of this peculiar year. If you’ve got a great idea for the banner image, but don’t have the skills to produce finished artwork, do feel free to share your ideas in case another person would like to work on the artwork.

The competition will be open for a week, at which point if there is more than one submission I’ll set up a Google Form for voting.

Best wishes and many thanks,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
Here I send two banner images, both created in Inkscape. So, you or other interested people can edit and customize it.

Artwork one: The circles means TW is a modular, lego-wise framework and also it is maintained by a lovely community (group of users [outer circles] and group of developers [inner circles])
TW5.1.23.png

Artwork two: This second artwork reflects the pandemic

TW5.1.23_mask.png
Artwork three: same as two with colorful face mask
TW5.1.23_mask_colorful.png

P.s: The second artwork uses a free open source icon from flaticon.

Note the FlatIcon terms of use: https://www.freepikcompany.com/legal#nav-flaticon

In Section 8. "License Agreement for Flaticon Content", it states:

The authorization to use the content in the Flaticon Content shall be free provided that any use of the content in the Flaticon Content by the User is credited to the Company/Website as stated by the Company from time to time. In order to benefit from the Service or to use the content in the Flaticon Content without acknowledging the Company/Website, the User must purchase a subscription (hereinafter, the "Subscription") in the Website and download the content in the Flaticon Content during the term of any such Subscription. Conditions in Section 9 shall apply to the purchase of the Subscription.

Thus, if we use a "free" FlatIcon image on TiddlyWiki.com, we need to include a statement (perhaps in https://tiddlywiki.com/#License), indicating the source of the image.

For example, in my InsideTiddlyWiki book, I have this legal statement: http://tiddlytools.com/InsideTW/#Legal%2FLicenses

Ciao Atronoush

I understand where you coming from, But the "mask" in outline does not work well.
It visually evokes other things. For instance the shape of the head of a teddy-bear.
In particular the loops for the ears are far too short to convey a mask.

I know its a PITA, and not wanting to diss your effort, but that image only kinda works because of Covid.
Prior to it it would be very confusing.

Best wishes

I might enter one day :-) when I have time.

This upcoming release is rather "Gadzooks Batman!"

     A flash. A thunderbolt.

Idle thoughts.

Glad you are alive. Hope you are getting better.

So far, I thought it is a bee, but thanks to your post, I now understand that it’s a face mask.

Atronoush,

I don’t think the banner should be about events in the world, but about the release itself. So instead of saying "When this version was released, it was a Covid epidemic," it should say, "This release featured this-and-that feature".

I like the first version better, for some reason the words "community" and "relationships" come to mind.

Great work, if you leave the colour off as in the second image it works because most masks are mono-chrome anyway.

A "homage" to covid is a great idea, and if the meaning fades in time that is OK.

Good work

Any consideration for creating a font for TiddlyWiki, for permanently use in banners and logos? Having distinctive font and logo could make TW easier to identify everywhere, and maybe more "serious" o more "corporate". We could still create banners using the same font. Any thoughts?

I think this is a release banner and not Tiddlywiki Lego! I think the Motovun is the TW Lego!

But you are right may be Jeremy should describe those criteria, like Font and other elements.

TT,

 1. Drop the first artwork svg in https://tiddlywiki.com/
2. Rename the new imported image tiddler to  New Release Banner
3. Save the wiki and reload
4. Look at the HelloWorld tiddler

It will demonstrates how new release banner works.

I think that the numbers don't jump out clearly enough from Bimlas' artwork. A good test is to move away from the screen and squint ones eyes so that the artwork goes fuzzy; the digits should still be as legible as possible. Perhaps making the digits much bolder, and a more contrasting colour, would help.

Amusingly, the idea echoes the cover artwork of a book of mine in the 1980s:

It's a poor quality image but you may be able to see that I rearranged the key caps so that the top row spells "BY:J.RUSTON".

Best wishes

Jeremy.

I'd think the sharpest contrast would be if the characters are white. But I can see how it needs some pretty colours so one idea would be to add some shimmer for the chassi part. Think CD disk reflection. Just an idea.

Had it just been a tad more visible we might have had another keyboard standard today!

For now, let’s look at it in white letters and see what it’s like.

Good idea, I didn't think of that. Originally, I also wanted to force the word "ZIP" on the image somehow because of the new Zip feature, but your idea fits the image better.

Classic but nice effect to play with keyboard keys. :)

As that, but BIGGER numbers.
Its a metaphorical keyboard, not an actual one.
One is still not quite getting the feeling of "The Shining" :-)

Isn't "23" meant to be special?

You can tell that I'm longing for some change of pace away from academic and committee work, right?
Of course I'm not attached to any of the details. The font is Tsukushi. Friendly, typewriter-invoking, but flexible. Connect the dots struck me as a nice conceptual pivot-point for a TW logo.

Just one stray thought: I wonder whether strings like 5.1.23 might (in some places) get misread as date tags (May 1 2023, or Jan 5 2023, depending on local conventions) ...
If so, perhaps having a "v." (as in v.5.1.23) in the logo might help.

Maybe you didn't see my post about that (announcing success) over at the Tiddlyspot-down thread-of-mourning. But I've been very happily using the GitHub saver ever since adding the second email address somehow made all the difference.
After that initial set-up, the GitHub workflow is in some ways even more convenient than tiddlyspot, except for the URLs being not so easy to scribble out quickly on the back of someone's business card. ;)

No I have not seen but I head over your GitHub page and saw a lot of wikis there :-) Congratulation!
One benefit here using GitHub is you start collaborative wikis. of course it needs all collaborator know how to work with GitHub!

After that initial set-up, the GitHub workflow is in some ways even more convenient than tiddlyspot, except for the URLs being not so easy to scribble out quickly on the back of someone's business card. ;)

If you do'nt mind, I know you can use GitHub link shortener, so your like https://git.io/JkMje
is shorten to https://git.io/

The other way is to use your own registered domain! So instead of seeing this https://springerspandrel.github.io/tw/logo-play.html
you may see this: https://springer.org/tw.html  assuming your domain name is springer.org
So on a business card you just need a line like this: https://springer.org   :-)

One minor point: As you are a professor at university, your resources on GitHub will be in reach of many interested people because GitHub is one of main place many academic people use it for their codes, courses, etc.

I am sure soon you will able to use GitHub own features plus Tiddlywiki endless features to crate awesome resources there.

Yes I think that’s quite important, and did used to be the case but has lapsed recently (see the archive here https://groups.google.com/g/tiddlywiki/c/l47ZZzWdDb8/m/6s0p_3QeCgAJ). Hello All,

I realise that this suggestion is a bit late in the day. Some ideas

Set a release date to coincide with a date which already has some meaning to it.

For example each edition could be released on a date where there is a new moon. Each release inherits concepts and metaphors associated with the moon!

Or a full moon? This could evoke the Lunar Society (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Society_of_Birmingham

The TiddlyWiki community could then be framed as a kind of society of scholars continuing a missing to share ideas and ideas about sharing ideas through continuous international, collaboration amongst a diverse set of people with diverse interests. What they have in common is the urge to store, remember, link, list and systematize using TiddlyWiki.

Somehow evoke a sense of mystery and pleasurable puzzlement that brings people into the community of uses.

Another way to go would be to systematically promote the links between TiddlyWiki and the cat logo. Images of cats looking at things with curiosity?

In both these ideas I started thinking about an abstraction of what TiddlyWiki is actually for. For me it's the sense of curiosity.

Perhaps we could seek to evoke the feeling which sparks the urge to systematize information revealed in a moment of epiphany. And the pleasure this brings when its an amateur pursuit

best wishes

Alex

Apologies, another technicality to note is that the bottom 46 pixels will be obscured by the banner text “What’s new in v5.1.23”, so it’s best to keep important parts of the image higher up.

Best wishes

Hi Jeremy,
Is it possible to have a tiddler https://tiddlywiki.com/prerelease/ called Banner competition and containing all proposed artworks to be able to compare candidate artworks?

I just dropped two of banners to compare and see how they look like! But having in one tiddler may be better!

Mohammad,

Seeing the logo in the context of that use, where the bottom is effectively cropped off, seems to require that nothing vital be along the bottom there...
At least in that mockup you made, Atro's modular orange banner certainly looks better.

If the 560x315 goes there, where the bottom gets cut off, then I'd submit this variant:

As Jeremy explained in few posts above:

I testes your new banner (just drag and drop to any of your banner into https://tiddlywiki.com/prerelease/ and change its name to New Release Banner and look at the HelloThere)
You did great! Love your banners. Please keep https://springerspandrel.github.io/tw/logo-play.html running!

Thanks, Atro! I enjoy this kind of graphics tinkering, and I can tell that you have a knack for it as well. Really, my diving in with this particular task reflects my sense that I gain so much more from this community than I can usually contribute. So when there's a need that's less about code and more about something up my alley, I figure it's an opportunity to give back.

Regardless of which option becomes the official TW5 logo, let me say that I'm happy to field requests from anyone here for something in the logo-graphics area. Doing things like taking a letter-form and morphing it (like the "y" in Tiddly becoming the keycap shape for the "W" in Wiki) is something that can be done in OmniGraffle, a software tool I have on hand. (I don't know Inkscape, but I suspect it's similar, given the crispness of your png design.) If anyone needs something like that done in a one-off way, drop me a line.

Bonjour :)

In this rainy Sunday I wanted to play with Inkscape isometric and path effect :)

In fact I don't really like colors but we can change it easily.
It's not really finished, the idea was to put 1.23 in tooltip, even if in the context it's almost there ;)
And on day I'll try to render Jack isometric maybe, in a simple rendering (tu put under TW5 for example since there is a blank space).

Greatly inspired by a tutorial from Logos by Nick on YouTube (he makes great screencasts!).

Many thanks,

Sylvain, I had actually noticed the name-spelling difference in the meantime as well -- always best to go with how someone actually signs their name!
I've just added the teal-magenta version to my overview page. It's easy to see how it could be given the same subtle grid-background that you developed on the blue-orange version. That's a great way to make the logo feel worthy of a close-up but still easily legible at a distance!

Jeremy

Good idea, I didn't think of that. Originally, I also wanted to force the word "ZIP" on the image somehow because of the new Zip feature, but your idea fits the image better.

Then maybe you could change "TAB" to "ZIP" (since it's already a very special keyboard).

Many thanks for the demo site lets to see all candidates in one place.

Few suggestion, of course if you have time
1. Please add other candidate artwork (you can ask for svg and png both)
2. increase the storyriver width and use vertical tabs in https://springerspandrel.github.io/tw/logo-play.html#Springer
3. change the site title (sidebar logo and title) to something more general not restricted to 5.1.23
4. let use your website for future competition so after a while we will have a lot of artworks for different releases/competitions ( consider in 2100 users will see the history of TW artworks :-) :-) :) LOL:::)
5. your website will acts as a resource other users can download their favorite artworks for their customization and use

And million thanks for making logo-play!

Atro,

Actually, I already had added all the more-or-less finished logo candidates I've seen so far (though some hadn't appeared on the Recent list because I dragged them in as images, and so the tiddlers lacked modification date until I added fields, etc.).

But I had been thinking about converting to vertical tabs or TOC display, so I went ahead and did that based on your nudge.

As for making the site open to future competitions, I'm happy to do so down the line if it's useful to folks, though hopefully 5.1.24 won't need to be coming down the pike in too much of a hurry. ;)

I did notice that the entry from Bimlas on 25th October doesn’t seem to be there though (see below).

The next step is that I’ll assemble a voting form for the entries. Perhaps those with multiple colour variants of their designs might want to choose a single entry, otherwise there’s a risk that the vote will be split.

Many thanks,
