Right now i am stuck typing 400 bars.

I looked up a solution by jed and it seems too complicated for a  task as simple as creating a table. Plus it kept creating the row and column headings as separate tiddlers which is a no-no.

is there a simple plugin to add a button in the edit toolbar that inserts a x*y size table?

400 bars? You mean pipe symbols |  ?

At the dawn of the computer age my trick for rapidly populating text with repeated text was (and still works)

Type your repeating text
Move just below the line.
Ctl-A to select All
Ctl-C to copy
Ctl-V twice to duplicate

Repeat steps three through 5 8 times, and you'll have more than 400 rows, if my math is right.

A button to make a basic table would be cool, though.

You seem to know how large your table would need to be. If you by any chance are planning to use it for comma separated entries or tab separated entries, you should have a look at Stephen Kimmels.  TableHelper

Yes that's what i'm doing.
Just curious is there a plugin(or macro) that allows atleast the editing of the sheet in the preview mode? It'd make life so much easier. Typing in bars(or pipes) is really confusing especially because they misalign too often and in large sheets it is a bloody mess.

If you're populating a for-view table by hand, then you're using TW as an editor, which really isn't its strong suit.

Generally, you'd want your data in tiddlers, and then build a table dynamically to display the info. That way you can re-use information, link to it, build sub-tables, etc.

But, of course, if you're making some type of reference manual, then maybe that's not feasible.

Have you seen

or the simpler version at

Good luck!

Mark,

Thanks for sharing the links!!
This seems a bit beyond my level of understanding. For now i am just trying to move all my exam related notes into TW so i am trying to keep it simple. For now the ability to copy paste from excel sheet to TW is more than sufficient. Maybe in the future i'll try to broaden my understanding TW :)

Reet,

Sure important necessary matters first - then the playing with tiddlywiki. When you get the chance, I think you will be glad to give Jeds table macros another chance. Just start with repeating the simplest demo. Lovely to be able to edit directly in the table from View mode.

Mark is right, there is a lot of table possibilities, but some of them are also rather demanding to make the most of.

Is your class over? In which case it probably doesn't matter what you do with your notes.

There is the Excel Edition of TW, that will convert your xls file into multiple tiddlers.

Why would you want to do this?

Right now, if you search for a term in your TW, it will just return the name of the tiddler with your 400 entry table. Not much more useful than using paper and pen.

But if you slice it into tiddlers, then when you search you'll find the actual items with your information.
