In another thread, fellow tiddleur Mohammad suggested I make screencasts to demo some stuff. I agree and it's one of those "ought to do" things I've been thinking of forever.

Actually, if there's a very simple workflow we could encourage more people to do this overall. I think it would benefit the TW project.

So how can I do this "very easily"? It must be super simple. I don't want to have to study a lot of stuff about editing and special software and yet I want the following:

Toggle live between recording:
 - only the screen (preferably a specific browser tab)
 - the screen plus also a small frame with my face in a corner
 - only my face
Add a premade intro or end segment to the result.
Put up on youtube easily.

Suggestions?

I have been considering using the Vimeo Chrome Record plugin:

Hi Mat,
I think Boris, Dave and Soren can have better suggestions as they have recently shared a screencast for Tiddlywii!

My workflow
1. I use the free open source tool ShareX: https://getsharex.com/
2. It has great features for capturing regions, capturing the whole screen, scrolling region, ... and like that.
3. It has after capture tasks e.g AUTOMATICALLY upload to Google Drive, or add a watermark, or resize it and many more
4. It can create screencast as gifs (small size video clips) or mp4 (high quality but large file)
5. It has several productivity tools like image editor, ruler, color picker, ...

The big drawback is it is only available for Windows!
The other drawback is it does not support a camera at the same time you record the screen.

Some links

Best wishes
Mohammad

Sidenote:
I use ShareX for my online classes where I mainly use screen capture with after capture tasks! to automatically resize images, add date, department logo, save a copy to my working folder and upload a copy to Google drive. I use Tamasha to load images as slides!

Joshua,
Vimo Chrome plugin looks amazing! Is it possible to save an offline video or you have to upload?

Best wishes
Mohammad

I've been using OBS studio for my screen casts. It's free open source and, most importantly for me at least is available through portableapps.com so I can install it on my works of without bothering the IT dept.
It's good. Let's you select your sources.. Webcam/screen 1 / screen 2 etc and do picture in picture recording. So, for example I can have the tutorial in a small window in the corner of the main screen as I use the software.

Just to mention this newish service that some people I know are excited about:

From their site:

Descript is a collaborative audio/video editor that works like a doc. It includes transcription, a screen recorder, publishing, full multitrack editing, and some mind-bendingly useful AI tools.

The kicker is that it’s commercial, and quite expensive.

But perhaps that’s not an insurmountable problem; perhaps it would make a good test case for Open Collective. Much harder is finding people with the skills to make a good, compelling screencast.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

I also use OBS. It has a bit of a learning curve. It creates files, that are easy to process by youtube, with a good quality. ...

I don't do any editing, because it would need way to much time. All my videos are recorded in 1 go. ... Most of the time the 2nd or 3rd version will work well enough to be pushed to youtube. ...

If I need to record a 5 min video 4 times, I need about 30 minutes. ... BUT it will be easy to waste hours editing 30 minutes recording into a 5 min video. ... So for me that doesn't make any sense.

It needs some planning, what I want to show. So I do make a "story book". ... If there are too many items, to be shown in 1 video, I'll do several of them.

I think, the most important thing is ... good audio quality!

Hi Mat

If you own or you are able to borrow an ipad you are able to create a screen recording with pip in one go - with no learning curve:

If you want to arrange the pip to be placed somewhere else on the screen recording - and you have the Luma Fusion app - simply insert the video 2 times in the time line, crop and fit the two videos on top of one another any way you like..

It is also possible to create pip with the free iMovie app. (https://youtu.be/WgnuuMBd2hg)

Sound and video quality is not an issue with an iPad - and you can use whatever headset (with a mike) that you prefer - or not ;-) - it all depends of the noise level in your environment..

Looking forward to a demonstration :-)

Cheers Måns

I just tried this and it was very simple to make a recording and put it up there. Of course, one has to register a Vimeo account but it was painless and it feels like the few remaining breadcrumbs of my soul and integrity (most of it seized by Google an other actors) were left intact.

My initial exeriments shows one has to choose the "page setup" and stick with it during the whole recording. (i.e screen and/or camera)
I'm not sure how/if one can merge two clips (i.e to add a common intro etc).

I think it is good enough for some quick'n dirty demos and it may be all I can expect for the effort I'm willing to put into it at this moment.

Could you elaborate a little on this? I did look up Open Collective and in your TW on Fission presentation it is discussed but I'm not sure how it would work - both regarding payment but also about how Descript would be used collaboratively...
