I’m delighted to invite you to the 2nd TiddlyWiki European Meetup on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June 2017, in Oxford, UK.

We had a similar event last year (see photo below and http://tiddlywiki.com/#TiddlyWiki%20European%20Meetup%202016). It was a terrific opportunity to meet face-to-face and get to know one another. We focussed on working together on twederation but broke out into many interesting discussions and demonstrations. It was pretty good fun, and hopefully we can learn from our previous experience and make the event this year even better.

Still to do:

* Finalising the venue; I’m hoping to use the same place as last year
* Although the event is free of charge, I’ll set up eventbrite (or equivalent) so that people can register and I can have an idea of numbers
* Planning the schedule. We might kick off with dinner on the evening of Friday 9th.

Please reply here if you’re interested in attending, or with any questions or suggestions.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

Awesome. Hope to attend again. Even if I am a TWC advocate rather than a TW5 one. :)

I plan on coming! Crossing the pond for this event -- and to deliver a paper during "Web Archiving Week" exploring the use of TiddlyWiki as part of a Web Archiving toolkit. Looking forward to meeting folks. I'd be very interested in visiting any other Universities to talk about ways to collaborate in the DesignWriteStudio, a virtual studio hosting classes, tutorials and development of TiddlyWiki-based educational resources, either in UK, Netherlands or Germany.

The photo needs a caption, like who is who? Okay JR is in there and looks a lot like his photo in his google groups tag/icon/thing.

I really doubt I can make it. Even if I could, I don't know what I could contribute other than stupid questions and a round of drinks.

I’d heartily endorse the sentiment that there are no stupid questions :)

More to the point, this is NOT a meetup just for the developers of TiddlyWiki: the main goal is to get together to celebrate and share experiences, thoughts and dreams about using TiddlyWiki, with the emphasis on using and tinkering with it.

I am using TiddlyWiki. I do tinker with TiddlyWiki. I am not currently in a position to fly across an ocean. Although I do have a friend who lives in Exeter, so maybe some year I can plan a vacation at the appropriate time.

I'm the one grinning like an idiot with the Dropbox T-Shirt on. (Got it whilst attending the DropBox Hackathon in London a couple of years back. My entry was disqualified because it didn't use DropBox's API calls. It was a file based Chat system which used some of the functionality of TW to handle chats between shared folders.)

Well last time we ran some Youtube streams and hangouts to let people take part. I couldn't make the first day last time because it was a Friday/Saturday meetup.

I think that the problem last time with the remote attendees was the wifi where we were. There may have been a problem with not having a dedicated computer to run the hangout, if that is the case I may be able to bring up an old laptop that can be used as a dedicated streaming machine.

I think the wifi was actually OK last time. I think we used my iPad running the Google Hangouts app; one issue was positioning the camera so that people could see anything interesting. This time, I’ve got a decent quality USB HD webcam (including stereo mics), which hopefully we can plug into Jed’s old laptop. A separate USB microphone might be handy too, I shall try to get hold of one.

Another issue may have been the way that we laid out the tables and chairs in the room. We could explore positioning ourselves more for the cameras benefit.

Last year we used a Trello board to collaborate on the agenda:

It might be good for remote viewers if we focussed on some more structured presentations.

Best wishes

Well I can bring along multiple computers (and Mobile devices - much to Jed's probably consternation!) so I can set up some dedicated streams if needs be.

in short. the issue last time was as much bad cinematography as bandwidth?

no reason you ALSO have to be film geeks as well as TW ones. But I think its pause for thought.

live interaction needs camera angles on something so sustained.

Haha, now I can’t resist: Imagine Josiah in a remote studio clipping the streams from all the Dragon-equipment following a trello timetable – that must be worth an Oscar for multi-angle meetup-livestreams!

I'll try to watch and participate remotely if there is any bandwidth left for me :–D

All the best!

I am old enough that I remember a class in university with an "experimental" set-up that became videoconferencing (Big TV/monitor, with camera at the ends of tables in different parts of the world).

Now we are doing it with Jed's old laptop and some spare parts that Jeremy has just lying around.

Someone mentioned having a robot that is controlled through a website built with TiddlyWiki. I wonder if there is time to enhance that to the point where it can be used as a shared tele-presence device and enable the remote people to move around?

I think that if Dragon has multiple computers he may be a better option since the old laptop I could bring is an old mac that barely works.

I'm a complete novice with TiddlyWiki, but very interested in learning more about it.

I'm a freelance programmer (specialising in Go), but no JavaScript expert.

My main interest would be to judge if I can use TidlyWiki as part of a future project to help those with Dyslexia.

Would the meeting be the right place for someone like me?

I'm starting to make real trip plans now!  :-D

Any of you guys planning on staying after Sunday?

BTW, I signed up to give a presentation on "CSS for TW". Participation will be 100% voluntary  ;-)

I'd love to hear or see stuff from other participants too. Even without being the organizer of this in any way, I can say that it is a really relaxed gathering and all for good tiddly fun so no pressure. So just present or share anything.  ;-) ;-)

Personally, I'd LOVE to see presentations on e.g
  • TW vs either (all) of Evernote/OneNote, WordPress, MediaWiki, ....or other application platforms (bookauthoring, blogging, ...)
  • TW integration with other systems. API, front-end.
  • Node.js TW - what/why/how...
  • NoteSelf - would be incredible if El Señor Danielo could show up)
  • TWederation - hopefully Jed and I can do something if we get rolling again, and hopefully Jeremy has something

IMO, the gathering is really a good opportunity to discuss weaknesses and potentials in TW.

AND... I really hope we can go to that wonderful tavern where Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland! Mario has even promised he'll do some Austrian dinner-yodeling! (Now IF he totally denies that he has promised this, it is only because he is such a shy guy so we must encourage him.)

And let us, from day one, have boxes with those amazing fruits and berries (those raspberries!) in the locale :-D

Hi Elliot

Yes, absolutely, you’d be very welcome. Your project should precipitate an excellent discussion.

To stress this is not a developer-focussed meeting. GitHub works pretty well for TiddlyWiki developers to collaborate with each other. The things that I think worked well at the last meetup included:

* Discussing TiddlyWiki’s nature/purpose/direction/goals etc.
* Show and tell, where people demonstrated how they use TiddlyWiki in their everyday life
* Developers demonstrating the capabilities of stuff they’ve built
* Developers collaborating with non-developers to build/adapt stuff (we worked on TWederation last time)

I’d be very interested to hear more about the Dyslexia project.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Thank you Jeremy, that is wonderful! I look forward to attending the meet-up and learning more about TiddlyWiki.

* Developers demonstrating the capabilities of stuff they’ve built

I've come to TiddlyWiki because I'm seeking a flexible front-end for my yet-to-be-written back-end text-analysis system for people with Dyslexia.

As a first place to hold the data, I've just started improving a Google App Engine (GAE) server for TiddlyWiki, see:  https://github.com/elliott5/tiddly

It is currently usable only by the admin user of the GAE app-engine project, so personal use only... but if you stay under the GAE limits ( https://cloud.google.com/free/docs/always-free-usage-limits ), it will be free.

I want to extend it a little to make it more useful. If you (or anyone else) has any ideas on what would constitute "useful" I'd be glad to hear them.

Then I'll hope to present my progress with it so far to the meet-up, if you are happy to add my name to the "Presentations" list on Trello.

Thanks again,

Elliott

So excited about this. Is the location decided yet - or do we at least know "for sure" that it is in the central parts? I'm asking because I need to make a reservation for where to sleep and I want it to be as close by as possible. What's a good "default address for reference" when looking for nearby accommodation?

BTW, I'm in Oxford between Friday before dinner and leaving Sunday late afternoon. I hope more people come already on Friday so we can have a joint kick-off dinner.

<:-)

P.S Mario - sorry you can't make it this time. Hopefully next year!

Great, really pleased that you are able to come. It's the same venue as last year; the address is on the website http://tiddlywiki.com/tiddlywiki-eu-meetup-2017/:

Oxford Centre for InnovationNew Road, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OX1 1BY

Great, let's aim to have dinner at the Jam Factory on the Friday evening. (We went there on the Sunday last year).

Best wishes

I just got my travel sorted out for this. I should be arriving in Oxford around 4pm on Friday and my train back to London leaves at 4pm on Sunday. I was hoping to stay longer this time but I need to run back to Paris so I can immediately leave for Berlin.

I am currently working out some bugs in the robot but I think that they are all problems on the node side of things, the tiddlywiki side has gone surprisingly smoothly.
