Hey - I'm revisiting TiddlyWiki - and wondering about podcasts and hangouts... I see the last hangout was 6 months ago? Have they moved somewhere? Where shall I look for getting into a live show and tell around wiki?

Jeremy started them back up last Spring after a several year hiatus, then promptly got Covid. Then he started back up in the summer, but then stopped. I think he is busy with other projects. At least, he's mentioned lots of projects.

Right. It’s the way of things. Anyone expressed interest in organising this - that is helping to form a podcast / hangout team to support Jeremy doing this - or am I the first person asking :)

Hi David, David,

I’d be interested to restart the hangouts again. I revived them last year with terrible timing, we kicked them off 10 days before I got COVID:

We then restarted them for a few weeks when I recovered, but then had to stop again when I developed long COVID. It’s a bit better now, and I’m better at managing it so I think it’s worth another try.

I’m open to suggestions as to whether we stick to the interview format we used last year, or try something else.

In terms of help, I’d be very happy if somebody was able to step up and take over production of the hangouts, but happy to accept any other help in the meantime.

One boring area where I would definitely appreciate some help is with the subtitle transcription, which is very tedious and slow — for a 45 minute video it was taking me 2-3 hours. I’ve been doing it with YouTube’s subtitle editor which is oddly clunky and hard to use. Some light Googling suggests that YouTube does let me give somebody else the ability to edit subtitles on my behalf.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Great. I’d love to help. I think the format is OK - but not quite in the spirit of wiki? Essentially it would be better if it enabled participation, without taking more of your time and energy.

Second, rather than simply being in the world of Hangouts it should be recorded in such a way that it can also be syndicated as a podcast.

On the transcript side - the defaults way to do this nowadays is using Otter.Ai - I think we can build on that to provide an enhanced podcast experience within TiddlyWiki.

Would love to discuss more fully the idea of a new “wikified” format for the podcast - but perhaps email is not the best way to do that?

Can I suggest we organise a call for those interested in helping / getting involved - where we can also show / share visual ideas?

Hi David,

Is your Media Garden based on Tiddlywiki? It is really interesting! Especially the way you arrange the materials and bottom bar!
+1

Best wishes

Hi David

Great. I’d love to help. I think the format is OK - but not quite in the spirit of wiki? Essentially it would be better if it enabled participation, without taking more of your time and energy.

I have wondered about using Twitch or Discord or something that has participation baked in.

Up until about Hangout #100 we had pretty much an open door policy, with more guests and more general participation. The trouble was that I got feedback that one or two guests were monopolising too much of the conversation, hence wanting to try a more structured approach last year. The most consistent positive feedback has been that people really like it when people screenshare and show how they use TW personally, which led to the idea of interviewing community creators.

Second, rather than simply being in the world of Hangouts it should be recorded in such a way that it can also be syndicated as a podcast.

That makes sense.

On the transcript side - the defaults way to do this nowadays is using Otter.Ai - I think we can build on that to provide an enhanced podcast experience within TiddlyWiki.

Looks great, I hadn’t seen that.

Would love to discuss more fully the idea of a new “wikified” format for the podcast - but perhaps email is not the best way to do that?

Very interesting. I actually do quite like written threads for discussing ideas because of being asynchronous, and the writing process helping to structure ideas, not to mention being able to share diagrams etc inline.

In terms of a wikified podcast format, I do have a few unrealised dreams around making video more of a first class citizen in TiddlyWiki that would be fun to discuss.

Can I suggest we organise a call for those interested in helping / getting involved - where we can also show / share visual ideas?

We could just kick off with a recorded hangout in a new topic-based format? And perhaps using something better for participation than YouTube.

Best wishes

Jeremy

I am not familiar with Twitch, but I think that a Discord channel would be a great idea.  In my personal experience, most of my special interest communities have moved to Discord. It' has a straightforward UI/UX and an easy way for large group engagement.

I think it would be great to put the hangouts in the Link Aggregator.

I think the podcast format is great especially when constructed as a demo / interview. But it doesn't always have to be Jeremy doing the interviewing. But I think having a relative structure that focuses on a specific topic is good.

Thanks

I imagine (and would put time into) a structure as follows:
  • Regular (weekly or monthly) Zoom-style facilitated meet-ups with break-out rooms.
  • Structured interviews in which community members present a piece of work together with a podcast host (interviewer)
  • Breakout rooms for those that want hands on demos and onboarding.
  • Recording of presentations, that are the released as a podcast (feed)
  • An informal WikiBar for those interested in hanging out and having informal discussions.
I’d love to help host a regular weekly (or monthly) such event. It would really need a small informal team of people to make it pleasurable.

We would explore together how to publish such a podcast in TiddlyWiki, and take turns in presenting / hosting etc

Any thoughts?

David, it seems to me that your last three bullets could be managed in a Discord channel if you were so interested with going that way. Perhaps even all five, as Discord was originally a platform for gamers to communicate in real time.  Just a thought.

Thanks David! I love your suggestions. I've replied privately to set up a call to chat through things, and will post an update.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Hi folks,

I do still have the TWclassic wiki, that contains a searchable overview about the hangout topics / timeline. ... I'll try to push them to a tw-link-able site, so the info can be found with https://links.tiddlywiki.com/

have fun!
mario
