Hi,

To save me a few hours of digging around in the code, can anyone point me at how to (or if there is already a plugin that) prevents the "Tags" field from listing possible tags until three letters are typed, a la the search box?

To answer the inevitable why-on-earth-would-you-want-this question :)

  •  I have a Tiddlywiki I use as a Zettekasten (i.e. research notes + omnireference, one thought per note). I use the tags to create tables of contents, so every topic tiddler is tagged with a larger topic. (seven or eight are tagged with the top-level "dashboard-topics", the rest are descendants of these).
  • Because I've taken a lot of notes, and because they divided into small chunks of info, I have a LOT of tiddlers. And because of the way I structure things, I therefore have a LOT of tags -- far more than would be useful if I were using them the way "tags" are typically used in other applications.
As a result, whenever I edit or create a tiddler (which is often), as soon as I tab into the "tags" field, there is about a second-and-a-half delay. Which doesn't sound like much, but it inturrupts the flow :). Stats:

  • Tiddlywiki size: 11.6 megabytes of text. Frankly, I'm amazed and impressed that the tag field is the only scaling problem I've run into!
  • Tiddlers: 4,360 (including 3,318 topic tiddlers, and 689 source tiddlers)
  • Tags: 1,122 (most of these are also topics, with their own notes)

Usually, I either know the tag I want to add, or I have it in the clipboard to paste, or I'm just tabbing down to the main text area, and have to tab through the tags area to get there. The list is sometimes very helpful -- but only after I've typed in enough to greatly narrow the list down. A drop-down menu with over a thousand entries is not helpful :).

Thanks!

There's a configuration tiddler:

$:/config/Tags/MinLength

HTH
-- Mark

Thanks! I figured there was likely an easier way to do it :)

Where is this located inside the config menu? o_O Or exploring $:/config gives you more ability than config page?

There are a few settings that we’ve elected not to give a user interface in order to keep the core smaller and simpler:

Best wishes
