Using TW html file on Chrome & Firefox - Problem

Hi,

New to the wonderful world of TiddlyWiki (Thanks, Jeremy!) and Stroll (Thanks, Dave!). Really like the idea of it. Learning and using program the past week.

Using TW itself is going pretty well so far. However, have a problem with using my TW html file between two of my computers; work and home.

Wednesday, before heading home from work, I emailed a copy of my TW html file from my work computer (Win10/Chrome) to my personal email and saved file to my MacBookPro (MBP) at home. 

File opened up OK on MBP in Firefox and was able to keep working in my TW file OK.

Last night I emailed the file to my work email address.

This morning, I tried opening up the TW html file in Chrome on my work computer and no go....won't load.....get error message:

Internal JavaScript Error

Well, this is embarrassing. It is recommended that you restart TiddlyWiki by refreshing your browser

Script error.

I tried refreshing browser, but still no go.....get same error message......

I updated javascript setting to specifically allow address to my TW file....but no go....

I tried opening the TW file I saved on work computer on Wednesday and it opens up OK.

Dang! Thought I had a simple solution to using TW on my various computers....

Any suggestions???

G'day Mark,

I'm thinking we need to know what changes were made to the TiddlyWiki file over on the MBP.

Did you add any new plugin, or tweak any existing plugin?

If not, you may need to take the last working version that worked on Windows, and drag different tiddlers from the MBP version to the Windows version one-by-one to find the Javascript Error culprit.

It would be interesting to see if the javascript error goes away using Firefox on your Windows computer.

Also, it might help to know what versions of Chrome and Firefox browsers you're using, just in case it gives anybody any ideas.

As I recall, I did make some tweaks to TW file per suggestions in the Francis Meetze video (#2) I watched....adding a tab in the right side pane and a few other minor tweaks, like changing the starting tiddler. Don't think I added any plugins, but would need to check file to make sure.

At home now, running FF 86.0 on my MBP.....

Not at work now, so, can't check Chrome version on work laptop until Monday....

One thought I had today is that if the issue is moving file between different browsers. I could install Chrome on my MBP and see if this makes things OK with moving file back and forth.

Due to security concerns at my work, I can't install any programs that require installing from an .exe file. Can only 'install' so called 'portable apps' that just need me to unzip a file somewhere on computer drive.  So, unless there's a portable version of FF to install, I can't use it on my work laptop. Hence, idea to use Chrome on MBP.....

Mark, you might want to check out https://portableapps.com for starters.   I don't use it anymore, but used the system years ago with great success.

So, I can run PortableApps program on my work laptop without installing it? Then within it, install Firefox? If so, then it should work.

You will still need to install it somewhere. a synced cloud folder, external drive or local folder. The download is an exe file - and even explained that it does not install into the Windows environment, I doubt your workplace would like it.

In the 2007-2008 era of TW classic, I used to run portable FF with my TW on a USB Flash drive that I would carry between my 3 offices (at the time).  I loved Portable Apps - you run it off of the USB drive, it does not install on your machine.   Once you install Portable Apps on the USB drive,  use Portable Apps to install the portable version of FF (or Chrome, but I would choose one) to the USB drive.   

I don't know about the Mac/Windows compatibility, though.  It looks like it will run on macOS via one of four different virtual machines.  WineBottler and PlayOnMac are free.  I have never tested a Windows VM on my Macs, though. 

Good luck!  Let me know how it goes. I may just try the VM on my MacBooks and Linux box...and go back to Portable Apps.

The part I'm not seeing in your description is how you saved in the first place. If you used "ctl-s" or the "save" button of your browser, then you will not have a working TW file.

Birthe, thank you for your input.....yes, if download is exe file, then probably won't work. I usually get an error message window pop up when I try that says, I need to enter an admin passwork, which only our IT guys have.

Stan, thanks, I can try running off of USB flash drive. I do know that when you insert a flash drive, it pops up a window saying that if you try to copy anything to the drive, it will automatically encrypt your drive....but don't know if it will let me run an app off of it....

Are you sure it would be okay to use a USB flash drive, I know many companies do not allow it.

I do realise of course that would be a handy solution.

Also I think the probability is, that it is your tiddlywiki that is giving the javascript error. I have seen that same error several times through the years.

I got them after editing a plugin or something. You do not notice until having saved and refresh the wiki.

Now is it possible, you saved your wiki and send it to your mail. Only when you opened it again, you saw the error. If that is the case, you would have the same error, when trying to open the same wiki on you  home computer.

I am not sure, will have to try.....

As I noted in my previous post, when you insert a USB flash drive in work computer, a window opens with message that drive will be encrypted with a password needed, if you try to copy any files from computer to the flash drive.

In the past, I was able to copy files from flash drive to my computer. Don't know if this is still true, as I have not tried this in a long time.

So, don't know for sure what will happen if I try to run portableapp from flash drive, will have to try and see what happens.

I just installed Chrome browser now on my home MacBookPro and the TW file opened up OK.

So, if I don't get situation fixed on work computer, then I probably will use Chrome at home (thereby matching Chrome on work computer) and avoiding any incompatibility issues from using different browsers.

Meanwhile, just checked TW file that I modified on MacBookPro with Firefox before emailing to myself at work computer Wednesday evening.

Per TW tutorial video, I did create a new tiddler with a tag "$:/tags/Sidebar and in the type field, selected "text/x-markdown" and below that in fields put "list-before" and to the right of that "$:/core/ui/SideBar/Open". The idea was to create a new tab in in the right hand side pane called 'Content'.

Could this cause issue with file on my work computer or is it more likely problem is due to using two different browsers?

Yes, I saved TW file on MacBookPro after updating it and then emailed it to myself at work. Then got javascript error when trying to open on work computer.

Today, I opened the updated TW file on my MacBookPro and it opens OK, no errors.

You already have your developer's toolbar open. If you click on "console" it might (might!) give some hints where the problem is.

That's a drag.

Your work computer may have some OS-level security settings that could be causing the issue (as if I would have any clue what they could be.)

Although a painful endeavour, we need to know what change to your TiddlyWiki file causes it to go awry on the Windows machine.

You're going to have to take the two versions of the TiddlyWiki file (the last one that worked on the Windows machine and one that no longer works on the Windows machine), open them both (read-only) on the Mac, and compare them to see what is different.  I doubt it has anything to do with regular tiddlers; my first guesses are TiddlyWiki configuration differences, plugin differences, maybe macros or system tiddler differences, or tiddlers tagged as startup actions tiddlers.

Once we know what difference is causing issues, then we can figure out if it is some security setting on your computer that is the real problem, or maybe you've discovered a bug in TiddlyWiki that needs addressing.

If I had money to spare, I'd bet on some Windows security setting.  Then again, I am biased: on tend to always blame Windows...

It seems to be happening while loading plugins, which suggests that it might be one of your plugins causing problems.

Are you using Danielo's encrypt plugin by any chance? There's some suggestion that it might be that plugin that is causing the problem. I don't believe that that plugin has been updated in a while.

Yes, it's possible my computer has some security settings, given the ultra high level of security IT tries to maintain at work.

Good idea of comparing files side-by-side and check differences.

And agree, Mark S. that it's likely a plugin.....and I may have installed the encrypt plugin, will have to check....if so, I can delete it tonight when I get home and resend it to my work computer and try again tomorrow morning....

Meanwhile, I looked at the Console pane again and noticed that I had not opened up the first error message when I took the snapshot. So, here's a new screenshot that shows a line of text under the heading 'Script Error'. Don't know if this helps....but just in case....

Good that you send the last screenshot. The last part....starting with the yellow triangel. refering to danielo/tiddlypouch.....something. Sorry I am not really able to read it, but I am sure someone will know what to do.

I will first admit, that I have never used tiddlypouch. I am sure you have a reason. I just wonder - because due to your sending your wiki pr. mail to yourself, I was sure you were using a singlefile tiddlywiki.

I have only heard of tiddlypouch before in relation to Danielo's NoteSelf....but that might be my mistake.

The fact, that you are not able to start your wiki up - make me think of, what Danielo himself called the chicken and egg problem... in the discussion here: https://forum.noteself.org/t/installing-the-plugins-on-an-existing-tw/24/8

Thanks, Birthe.....well, I thought I had a reason at the time when installing.....I was following some instructions for setting up TW and it suggested NoteSelf as a means to save TW file to where you want when you click save....or at least so I thought....

Sounds like it could be the culprit or one of them....so, sounds like I should remove it and then see if file opens up OK on work computer.....

Since I am at work, I decided to go back to file that I last updated successfully here and open it. And it opens up OK

Here's two screenshots of console info for this TW file. You can see that the file opened OK.

Although given what I seen, I'm thinking to start a new fresh TW file without any of Danielo's plugins....and then see what happens on different computers, moving file back and forth.

And this screenshot is taken a bit further down in the list...all about tiddlypouch.....

I really believe the problem for you right now is Noteself and tiddlypouch. As I remember it, it was original built to be run from Danielos original logging into your own database. Rebuild later for people to run their own nodejs wikis. It might have changed since then.

Now as you suggest you could start a new wiki and import the other plugins you like, and your own tiddlers. Saving is another question, are you able to install browser extension on you workplace browser? If it is possible I admit my favourite is Timimi. (lovely backups too!)

I will start a new fresh TW file and then slowly, add one plugin at a time, if I need it, and make sure it runs on both computers, before adding anymore. This way I should easily know if any item causes a problem.

I have been able to install some browser extensions in workplace browser, Chrome. Will check out Timimi....

The plugins on you list are plugins I am using very much myself, I have not had any problems. I know we can never be sure...used together all of them, but I am optimistic on you behalf.

Yes I am using stroll. But I have many wikis for different purposes.

Most extensions ask for permission more or less defined. I do understand though, that Timimi needs to be able to save to your drive and also to make the backups.

Those permissions are UNavoidable  as Timimi accesses your drive outside the browser. It is normal and nothing to worry over too much.

Last evening at home on MBP, I created a new TW file with just Stroll added.

Then emailed it to my work computer.

Now I am at work and tried to open the TW file in Chrome, but get error message when it tries to load file.

It may not matter any, but just in case: what version of Chrome are you using?

Also: where is favicon.ico located?

On work computer, think it was version 86.x.x , not 100% sure, as while checking version, Chrome updated itself to Version 89.0.4389.82 (Official Build) (64-bit). So, now can't see what version is was before.

At home computer, I installed the latest Mac OSX version about 4 - 5 days ago...think it is version 88 or 89....would have to check when I get home...

Have no idea about favicon.ico......not familiar with it.

I think the favicon message always shows up unless a favicon has been assigned. I see it a lot. It probably doesn't have anything to do with the current situation.

Based on your previous experience, I would immediately wonder about "pouchdb" and "tiddlypouch". They might be leftovers from trying NoteSelf. If you're not using NS, I would experimentally start by getting rid of those two (being sure to have a backup).

I think you may have some typos there. Like I suspect "elink" is actually "relink" . I don't know what "online" is.

I was getting the same JavaScript error on one of my TW5 using the Brave browser, which is a Chrome derivative.  I'm now using Vivaldi, which I believe is also a Chrome derivative but I have not had a JavaScript error.  The plugins are many (don't laugh):

Went ahead and started a new, fresh TW file this morning, while at work. Thought it best to do it now, as I haven't created personal or important info in it yet. Also, watched most of Francis Meetze's videos today about setting up a TW. Working in Chrome at work today, all went well....emailed a copy of file to my home computer before leaving work today.

Opened the file in Chrome on my MBP at home and all is working well right now.

Big test will be to do some updating to file and send back to my work computer and see if it opens OK this time. Won't be back at work until Thursday morning....will report back then on this.

In meantime, will continue learning about using and tweaking TW. Plenty of things to learn!

Really like it so far......and it's fun to use.

And thank you all for your help the past week, it really makes a big difference in wanting to keep using TW, despite the file challenges.

Just an FYI, I've had issues in the past where TiddlyWiki files attached to emails are mangled when received by the recipient. 
So if the problem persists, try zipping the file before emailing or use a cloud service to sync between devices (Dropbox/G Drive etc).

Silly question: can you access Microsoft OneDrive from both work and Mac at home?  Either work-related OneDrive or personal OneDrive?  If so, would that work with your TiddlyWiki?

I zipped TW file this morning at home before emailing it to my work computer and VOILA! the TW opened OK after unzipping it!!!

FInally, got a working system to share TW file between home and work computer!

OneDrive works pretty well for syncing TW, but I typically don't need to use my work wiki at home. I don't have an automatic saver set up, but because I use Firefox with the HTML5 fallback server method - https://tiddlywiki.com/#Saving%20with%20the%20HTML5%20fallback%20saver - I don't have any issues. Oddly enough there's not really any mentioned about OneDrive in the docs.
