Where can I find information on creating/using my own fields in tiddlywiki?

Do you mean adding a field to a new tiddler or make every new tiddler have a concrete set of fields? Have you searched in the group?

I have a tiny bit written about it here, but you are asking for something really vague. If you have something more specific than I would be happy to help but for what you are asking the answer is just add fields at the bottom of the edit view of a tiddler and then reference them using text references.

There isn't really any comprehensive guide to starting with tiddlywiki yet. Some are being worked on, but for the moment none exist.

Yes, it is  vague. Let's see if I can "unvague" it.
On opening a tiddler and pressing the "more" button I get what is called a "fields" button.
It seems like something useful and I want to know how to use it.
You mentioned an "add a new field" at the bottom of the tiddler (in edit mode) and I don't see such an option.
I can add tags which I do but that is all.
Is there a global on/off switch for adding fields?

Oh, it sounds like you are using tiddlywiki classic. If you are just starting to use tiddlywiki you should probably use the never version (TiddlyWiki 5), you can get it here. The new version is in many ways easier to use and there is active development for it.

If for some reason you do want to continue using the older version than I am afraid that I can't be much help because I didn't use it much. Someone else in the group here could probably help though.

Hi hupo,

If you are in fact using tiddlywiki classic, go to http://classic.tiddlywiki.com/. Type fields in the search box and you will get 7 results. Look at them at see some examples. The first is how to use fields with the newTtiddler macro, and I think that might be what you are looking for.

So, there is a better version of tiddlywiki.
I'll set it up and see what I can do with it.
Main issue would be migrating a wiki from classic to TW5. Is that a problem?

If you aren't using plugins or anything too complex on your wiki than it is only a matter of some mostly simple syntax changes. If you do have something complex in your wiki than it may be harder depending on what you have.

Well thank you for your help so far. I'm setting up TW% and I have to admit it looks a bit different at first glance.
Should keep me busy for a while I guess. It does makes life interesting   :-)
Meanwhile thank you all, Jed, Danielo and Birth

Yes, bacl already....

First thing I noticed in TW5 is the backup system.
It tells me it is saving but I have no idea where
Reading up on it I notice the auto backup from TW classic is gone..... or am I missing something?
Without a trusty backup system I wouldn't bet too much on TW5

Unfortunately there isn't an automated backup setup for TiddlyWiki5 yet. When you save it is saving to the same file you opened. If you don't know where that is look for empty.html in your downloads folder.

Well there is the TiddlyFox (Firefox extension) with save me many time (when TW crash with result 0 kb file..). We have a daily backup with that.

(I don't remember if Jeremy release the last version, but I use this  https://github.com/buggyj/TiddlyFox/tree/saver)

Well, I have reverted to the good old copy-paste saving system.
I do manually what the TW Classic used to do
Hopefully someone will come up with a better backup system by the time I am solid with TW5

How are you saving your TW? You never mentioned. If you are very interested in backups, there is a very easy way: don't use tiddlyfox and you will get a fresh new copy of your wiki each time you save. Try to do it in chrome, for example.

I used to save with firefox using the tiddlyfox add-on - it worked for a long time
Now for some reason it doesn't save so I backup manually using copy-paste
Actually it stopped saving since I installed TW5. Maybe that was the cause?
