TW5 node.js; TiddlyWiki to replace OneNote

I currently use OneNote to organize content for documentation of projects, server configuration, etc. I need to be able to save images, PDFs, etc. with most of my documentation. One of my concerns is that this may slow down the general responsiveness of an TiddlyWiki instance.
Who else is using TW as a OneNote replacement? Any feedback for a newcomer?

Hi tim! This is not a very helpful answer but still;

In one sense I guess we all use TW as a OneNote replacement. Images, pdf's etc are not saved *in* TW, rather you link to them or have them show "via" TW. Frankly, I'm a bit insecure myself on the best way for this. But I recommend you to start by checking out Tobias' fantastic stuff and search for "pdf" and "images" etc.

I hope people who have experience with OneNote will answer you here and give pro's and con's. IMO we see too little explicit comparison between alternative solutions. Maybe few people have experience with other systems - if you like TW you stick with it (my case) and if someone can't stand tiddlyfiddling I guess they  leave pretty soon.

I had been using OneNote for six or eight months when I first discovered TiddlyWiki, sometime around 2009/'10.  Though I can no longer remember what, there was something I desperatley wanted to do in OneNote and couldn't — and someone on Twitter suggested I check out TiddlyWiki.  I haven't looked back.

If you drag and drop files into TiddlyWiki to import and store them there, your wiki probably WILL grow faster than you can manage it.  But if you take a few extra moments to put those files in a folder alongside your TiddlyWiki and reference them with canonical URIs, you'll be able to navigate and view them in TiddlyWiki without the massive impact on performance.

You can do the same trick with PDFs — just set the tiddler type to "application/pdf" — but I've found that I can't view PDFs in TiddlyDesktop (which runs on Node.js), even though they render fine in the browser.  So you may want to check out Tobias Beer's PDF macro, which allows you to view PDFs through an iframe AND have a direct link to open them, in case you're opening your TiddlyWiki in an environment where they aren't displaying in the frame.

Hi, SecretHQ. I've first used TW several years ago. Not sure why I abandoned it. I will have to use OneNote professionally; I can't completely ditch it. But, I've always liked TW for its modular approach and the fact that you can break down information tidbits in smaller and smaller chunks. Very powerful. And I like it being OpenSource. I will read up on ExternalImages. Tiddle typ options are Dev / Text / Images. where do you find "application/pdf" or is this a plug-in?

It isn't listed in the dropdown, but it works as a recognized tiddler type if you manually enter it.  ;)

I find Tobias's macro serves the same function without all the typing.   I just create a tiddler named "myPDF.pdf" with <<pdf "path/to/myPDF.pdf">> as the tiddler body, and voilà — a beautifully embedded PDF.

I did make one slight tweak to the macro to suit my own preferences, however; I display the link at the top, so it's easy to click on when I'm using TiddlyDesktop, where I can't view PDFs in frames:

I have replaced OneNote with Tiddlywiki by using TiddlyClip - COMPLETELY!

... MS Project with Timeline

... and Mindmap with Tiddlymap.org

... added Tidgraph for organigrams and logic / decision  trees

... added datepicker for convenience (I find it helpful to set format="YYYY-MM-DD" and fieldFormat="YYYY-MM-DD" and adjust the journal-date-setting to YYYY-0MM-0DD)

AND NEVER LOOKED BACK!

Other plugins you might like (I have them in all my templates) are

-encrypt tiddler plugin

-checklistdemo

-simple calendar macro   http://simplecalendar.tiddlyspot.com/

wrap it all up in one file for use as a template; put it on a USB or phone; got to work, collect data,

later import into a TW running under node.js and process it.

Hi Pit.  In searching for mind mapping software this AM I discovered concept mapping is really what I was looking for - at least I think.  This led me to TiddlyMap and TiddlyWiki. I haven't been so stoked to get a new piece of technology working in a while.  Of course this has led to diversions with node.js and where I might host to allow access anywhere.  Whether I should create a Docker image to make the whole thing portable, and so on, distracting me from my original task at hand.  LOL.

Given you appear to successfully be using both and more with success (wiki and map) I'm wondering if you can offer guidance as to whether TM can be run successfully on node.js or not.  Any downside?  Part of the reason I am asking, is after struggling for the first while with the simplest of tasks, trying to install per the documentation by dragging and dropping, only to eventually realize that IE doesn't support it, eventually I dropped the first plugin onto my wiki page and it crashed.  The wiki won't load now either.  I see this has happened to others.  I am not sure if it is something than can occur with a single file wiki as well or not.

I'm not at all disturbed by losing my brand new empty wiki and will be careful with future installs I am about to attempt again.

My real question as stated is whether you are running node.js or not.

I'm excited to see a fairly active community here and hope to spend some more time this weekend getting this to work for me.
