So I saw the new pinstripe background in the 5.19 pre-release, and it reminded me of a feature I saw on trello, adding some simple textures to colored tags.

If i had a wishlist for a texture i could add to my tags in addition to color, I would have:

Checkered, (and it's cousin, parallelogram tessellation)
Striped lines (horizontal, diagonal both ways, vertical)
Wavy, striped lines

etc.

This is particularly useful for people who have a hard time distinguishing colors, but is great even for people with standard sight, because it provides another tool for visual recognition.

what do you think?

hmmm

So if someone tells me, I should open the "xyz" tag with the "tessellation" background, you can be sure, I'd need to use browser search and type "xyz", because I don't know, how tessellation looks like.
Also pixel backgrounds will hurt text readability in the tag pill. So basically everyone will have problems now, to read the text. Which may be kind of fair ;)

IMO use the built in tag symbols. It's part of the core, so it works out of the box.
The symbols are svg, so they work well with every screen resolution.

You can use symbols like (103), (007) ... What ever you want.

IMO no new complexity needed. Use the existing stuff. Just create some really simple svgs as a plugin.

I think that this could be done using the background-image css property. I don't know if you can use svg images as backgrounds so it may not scale perfectly. Do you have or can you make the background textures? I am not very good with creating svgs (or other digital images), but I can work on putting together the css to allow you to set custom backgrounds for tag pills.

There are a few ideas floating around that would be improvements in usability for tiddlywiki, maybe we could put together a listing of themes and other tweaks for different helpful modifications if people think that would be useful.

The reason that colored tabs are useful is because it conveys information very quickly without having to modify any other features present. Adding Web images as icons or labels won't do this, but different textures could perform the equivalent function.

It looks like there isn't currently a simple way to set the background image of individual tags. Using the same method as is used for setting the color of specific tags a generic style field could be added that lets you put things to be added to the tag style shouldn't be to difficult. I haven't looked at the code yet so I may be wrong.
