A few newbie questions

Hi everyone, first time posting here. I have had a TW5 for a year or two now, but don't use it as often as I had intended. I mostly use it for scratching down useful lines of code that I have to come up with along the way (like for AWK which I rarely use). I recently decided being more active with a personal wiki would be a good idea. I checked out DokuWiki thinking maybe it would suit me better, but I think TW has much saner defaults and looks nicer out of the box (any wonder I use fish shell?).

Anyway my two big questions are:

1) Why google groups? I'm not sure I have ever used a google group for anything else. It seems so odd and, frankly, cluttered to me. I'm totally a forum guy and expect things like separate sub forums for Newbie Corner, Development, Theming, Plugins, etc...

2) Looking into the CSS stuff a little bit, what does .tc-X stand for? Tiddlywikiclass? I don't see it mentioned anywhere and I guess it is ultimately inconsequential, but I like explicit code ;). Are there any other customization resources besides http://tw5custom.tiddlyspot.com/ ? It seems rather complicated as a newbie, and while that site is detailed it still seems to loose me quite easily.

And referring back to #1, this is exactly the kind of thing I would expect stickies for.

Because it was easy to set up. There have been many discussions on can't we have something better and more searchable

Yes. Look in $:/themes/tiddlywiki/vanilla/base and associated tiddlers to see the list of defined classes. There's only a couple like tc-btn-invisible that are popular for use. The rest you'll find if you want to modify some existing macro and see what they are used for like (I think its called) tc-dropdown

I don't know what the original thinking about GG was, but if you're thinking about other forum software (e.g. bbphp) then keep in mind that someone has to install it, initialize a database, apply patches, purge old users, and make upgrades. If it's hacked, it might have to be shut down until fixed. It's much easier to just let Google handle the hassle.

The .tc classes let people who are good at CSS do all sorts of things. TW automatically adds classes based on tags (i.e. .tc-<tagname>) which means you can change the look of a tiddler just by adding a tag.

Exactly that. I'm allergic to servers :)

We started with Google Groups in 2005, when there weren't so many hosted options.

The .tc classes let people who are good at CSS do all sorts of things. TW automatically adds classes based on tags (i.e. .tc-<tagname>) which means you can change the look of a tiddler just by adding a tag.

tw5custom is, I believe, fellow member Ton Gerners site. He is definitely one of the guys to listen to. There are several other community member resources, where IMO Tobias Beers site is in a league of its own. Some of it is pretty advanced though.

Of course, there is the official guide tiddlywiki.com which has separate section on customization.  In some sense everything in TW is about customization. But it also depends on what you mean with it. There is "native" customization and there is e.g CSS customization or even javascripting.

If you have specific things you want to do but don't succeed even after searching the available sources and the archives here, then just post here.
