Hi all
The bi-directional thread I started this morning referenced Roam. Since that thread got things moving in one direction, the topic of Roam needs to go in this separate thread.
I have been playing with Roam (
https://roamresearch.com/) off and on today. It is pretty amazing. It is still in beta and has huge rough edges. But what it does, it does really well.
1) Has most of the functionality of other outliners. So it is really fast for writing.
2.a) Follow a tag or a link on that page (for example 'Jealousy' - note that at present tags and links are functionally the same in Roam), to see not only the link back to El Placer de vivir, but also the lines with those links - and that section is editable (when not in read-only mode).
2.b) If you change a page title, it automatically changes all links.
2.c) Oh, and in that editable sectoin of backlinks, it also shows unlinked references to the present page, and gives you a button to 'Link all'.
'
3) In the left sidebar, click on Graph overview. Click on a node to see its relationships light up. Then right-click a node and choose View in cose layout'
4) In the left sidebar, click All pages to see and search all the pages.
5) Right-click the page title (El placer de vivir... or whatever page you have open at this point) and choose open in right sidebar. You can have that open and edit it while going to another page, and have them side by side.
6) Feel free to read my comments in the "Thoughts on Roam" page, linked to from the left sidebar shortcuts area
7) There are numerous features you can't see in a read-only page: diagrams, tables, emojis, quick embedding of Youtube videos, tasks and scheduling, etc. If you want to play with the editing features, go to
https://roamresearch.com/#/v8/help/page/1308.
7.a) Try typing a / in the text somewhere to see the insertion options menu that comes up.
7.b) Right-click a bullet to see more options
7.c) Lots of valuable pages in there about knowledge management and Getting things done, and other topics, as well as help for Roam. See the All pages section.
I am not requesting feedback, and it is not a matter of comparing Roam and TiddlyWiki (largely a case of apples and oranges), nor am I requesting these features. I am just posting this because I was impressed, and thought you all might like to see this. This makes the production of topical notes based on research and reading very easy on a very huge scale. Enjoy.
