Howdy everyone,

Did you all know that Accotink Creek and Holmes Run are stocked?

If you are not going to fish, I'll just keep the stream to myself.

Tight Lines,

Todd

Hey -- I live on Accotink now and must admit that I was unable to locate any over the weekend.  They must hold up differently than they tend to do in the spring.

I did have the customary red fox and several bucks following a doe literally 10-15' from me.  You know the stream better than I do!

I went over to Holmes Run on Monday and got skunked! There were definitely tons of trout in the pools, but nothing I threw worked. I tried everything in my fly box. I saw a few others, but was mostly all to myself for several hours.

It was strange to see schooling trout...in one pool there must have been 50 all together.

It isn't that strange when you consider that they're hatchery trout, recently stocked.

Did you try the pellet fly?

I tried a pellet fly last week, no luck. Streamers got the job done.

I've gone out to Accotink a few times over the past couple of months.  I've had zero luck; haven't seen a trout anywhere.  Are others having luck out there?

Walked most of Accotink for the first time on Jan. 2. Zero caught and zero sighted.

Fall trout stockings on Accotink are unreliable in my experience.  The first reported 'stocking' of Accotink this past fall was posted to the DGIF website (together with Holmes) but after I walked nearly the entire length of the stream and found it void, I contacted DGIF.  They responded that Holmes had been stocked but Accotink was not (due to problems in transport), and that the website would be corrected and a later stocking date would be set instead.

After the later apparent stocking date I found the stream much as I had before -- from "ballpark to ballpark", boulders heaved to reveal nothing.  Todd seems to have managed some fish, so befriend him if you can.

The Spring stocking seems more reliable, and fish are fairly easy to locate and catch following the DGIF posted dates.  We've caught fish the last 2 springs, and have been able to locate fish that we couldn't catch on some days.

If you're interested in stocked trout in the fall I would advise that you walk the stream after a stocking report and observe for signs of life for a period of time, but do not waste your life away hammering water that is void of fish.  I won't fish a fall stocking on either stream in the future.

Frankly, I'd just assume not bother stocking either stream at all, period.  The sunfish, chubs, large shiners, small bass, etc. are fun (to me) in the Spring-Summer and virtually no one fishes it....except for a few hand-liners and spin folks down on the actual lake.  It's a good place to practice, try out new lines/flies, and have fun when I don't feel like going to SNP.  I want to get my seine net out and check for other small species this Spring -- something that interests Beth and I but probably few other people.  I also plan to get a good canoe this year and float the lake to see what the small bass and sunfish have to offer.
