Just saw a posting from 2022 while walking along the NW branch about a delayed harvest put-and-take trout area/no fishing zone-has anyone else heard about or seen this?

Yes, it shows on the DNR Trout stocking map that it was stocked 4/22.

Pretty much in my back yard. Never knew.

yea, can't imagine any holdovers but the fact that they thought it was worthwhile to do it is pretty interesting/encouraging. Now if only they could clear out some of the obstacles to shad passage and take out the Burnt Mills dam...

honestly the Anacostia system could be an amazing fishery with a little water quality improvement.

I've assisted Chris Campo with derbies on the Anacostia itself, and it is much cleaner than I expected. I know he fishes for snakehead there from a kayak.

Andrew Reichardt did a podcast and video on snakehead fishing there as part of the Seven Fisheries in Seven Days project.

Here's more info on fishing the Anacostia from the River Keeper site: https://www.anacostiariverkeeper.org/programs/recreation-and-access/

I can't wait for the AWRP to turn this around with our support. Shad runs above and below DC!!!

Best,
Owen

I also live very close to the NW branch in Wheaton. I believe the stream is governed by simple put and take regulations with a limited closure for a week in March at the start of stocking season. But maybe the regs are changing for this year.

In my experience over the past 2 years, it gets fished out pretty quickly after stocking. And there are definitely no holdovers, the water gets too warm in the summer for trout to survive.

Just updating this thread to note that I just saw on one of my Facbook fishing groups that someone caught a trout today in the Anacostia - must have been one of the ones that washed downstream from the NW Branch!

That’s so cool! I’m always fond of hearing stories of people catching stockers in the main stem Potomac or Shenandoah or really anywhere that they’ve traveled a good distance from their original stocking.

Thanks for sharing.

Seems as good a place to post this as any: on a family bike ride this weekend, I SWEAR I saw a large group of stockers in Rock Creek. I couldn't stop for a good look (riding sweeper) but they had all the earmarks. Couldda been suckers of some species (that time of year for them too), but they just looked "trouty." Am I delusional?

How far up rock creek? Could be river herring in the lower stretch.

Thanks gents- this was in DC, but above Military Rd., so I wouldn't say "low" but maybe "lower"? Not in MD.

Huh, that is a stumper.  I'd be very surprised if there were herring or shad that far up (though it would be great if there were!).   Would be fascinating if they were trout, but do they even stock any of the Rock Creek tributaries in Montgomery County?

My (1, good) Anacostia River fishing story: I went during the cicada hatch a couple years ago. Live bugs on the water, cats cruising the banks, I couldn't get a sniff. I was ready wrap it up and thought I'd dredge the bottom for a couple casts. Tied on a jig-head type fly with a Mr Twister tail that works well for river smallies. First cast, on the drop, and the line rips through my fingers. My best Bill Dance set and "snap!" That was either a nice snakehead or a big kitty fish. Gotta tie some more of those "flies."

I think they stock Lake Needwood up in Rockville but I'd honestly guess either suckers or river herring-I've heard reports of herring using the fish ladder and there was that kid who caught a hickory shad in rock creek a few years back.
