Hey -- I've finally joined the rest of you in sharing in the regional shad
experience. Another TPFR member "showed me the ropes" and we had a good
morning on the water.
I know many (most) of you have caught tons of shad and have seen and heard
about almost nothing *but* shad for the past month....just wanted to throw
my first out there.
Now back to the brook trout!

Try calling Kittery Trading Post, they know the area and should have
referrals to good guides. There's also an Orvis outlet in Kittery and LL
Bean and Cabela's aren't far either and are all good sources of chatter on
the local fishery. Finally, it's a few hours away, but the West Branch of
the Penobscot fishes well that time of the year for wild landlocked
salmon--if you happen to go, Abol Bridge Campground Store or Old Town Canoe
should be able to point you to a guided trip. Have fun.

Picked up these two today from shore above Fletchers along with a handful
of shad. One was deep in the middle of a swing and the other hit as I was
lifting my line for a cast when my fly was almost out of the water.
Definitely got the adrenaline going. I think pretty much any big streamer
with some white will probably do the trick. Swinging flies deep in current
has been most productive for me.
When I first got on the water, I saw what looked like some stripers busting
herring and was wondering if anyone had ever tried some big poppers early
in the morning...might be worth a try...
Still hoping for one of those 30 inchers I keep hearing about...

Different day = Different river
April 6th the flow was about 20,000 cfs and the bite on a swung fly was
epic.
April 11th I fished 8 AM to Noon and was skunked on the two-handed rod with
15' of T-11 in the vicinity of Gordon's Rock.
River was down to 16,000 cfs and was in great shape.
The shore spin casters that were dredging the bottom with darts and
flashier lures were into fish on every cast.
I even stood next to them right under the trees and managed a few long "
Perry Pokes", but could not get deep enough to get a strike.
Noticed that other fly guys from boats or outrigger canoe were also not
catching many fish, but they were doing better with probably full sink
lines.
Without a doubt the spin guys had a great advantage yesterday.
The slot to the left of "Early Morning Ambush" was absolutely stuffed with
spawning herring and they were being heavily predated by cormorants.
Regularly, I saw cormorants surface and swallow 8-12 inch fish whole.
Perhaps the heavy cormorant presence drove the H shad to deeper holes along
the bottom.
Sounds like the fishery is evolving into a low light / evening game for
those that like to swing flies.
In addition, quite a few guys were targeting stripers. Guys in boats
tossing heavy, big white lures. They were connecting with some regularity.
All in all a fun time even without the tug. But man, the spin guys from
above "Morning Ambush" and below "Sand/Mud Bar" were killing it.
Also, the spin guys upstream did really well.
I think that "Pothole" and "At your feet" were producing well on darts, too.

*sigh*
After a particularly unproductive couple of hours on the river yesterday afternoon, I took a bad step getting out of a rowboat at Fletcher's and dislocated my shoulder. Darn thing decided to stay dislocated until a doctor and a burly nurse at Sibley muscled it back in. Thank goodness for pain killers!
Anyway, I'll probably be out with my son at some point.
Hmmm, maybe I can cast leftie......

Yep -- "better living through chemistry" ;). Glad you're not too busted
up.
I fished the run for the first time today and had decent action all
morning. It was a fun experience -- I'm glad I did it...now back to trout.
;)
