So I almost always get the same questions from tourists over at the tidal Basin.

#1  Are there actually fish in that water?      Yes, there are fish in the potomac.

#2  What are you going for?/ What kind of fish are in that water?       Large mouth, small mouth, striped bass, blue & channel cats, carp, snakeheads, yellow perch, white perch, shad, etc…   (remind me if I'm missing any)

#3  You don't actually eat the fish, do you?     I don't eat them. (unless possibly if it's a snakehead)

#4  Do they have 3 eyes?     Nope

#5   Is this waterway natural or manmade?    The Tidal Basin is man made (aprox. 1920) but is part of the Potomac river.

What do you get?

I've never fished the Basin, but would love to cook up a story about how it's naturally formed. "During the ice age a large circular deposit of limestone and granite was left here. Later the Patowmack tribe began to quarry the rock to trade with English settlers..."

Seriously people still think it's1982 when the tidal river was sludgy near DC.

Some interesting reading about how the gates work, they are automatic gates, meaning that they use the pressure of the water to either open or close.

If I am in a good mood I will explain to people the function of the basin and a bit of the history. Other times I pretend I don't hear them.

One guy earnestly asked me if I was fishing for flounder in the Tidal Basin.

I'm a newbie. Most of the time when people ask me what I'm fishing for, I say: "Whatever I can get!"

I get similar questions when fishing Widewater at Anglers on the C&O Canal. Also the, "Is that fly fishing?"

I get a lot of questions at Widewater as well.  I'm surprised by "are there fish in there?" as I think the fish are easy to see.

My dad had a colleague who claimed to have caught a flounder in Pohick Bay, if that was true, sometimes fish get lost.  I saw a horseshoe crab once at Leesylvania.
