We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 10 April at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am.

Perhaps you have heard the term "spey casting".  You have been curious, what does pet sterilization have to do with fly casting?

To clear that up, the sterilization is 'spay', not 'spey', though pronounced the same.  'Spey' actually refers to the Spey River in Scotland.

We will have a focus group on spey casting with single-hand and double-hand rods, and that will lead to a discussion on what is trout-spey. (that is definitely not trout sterilization).

"Curious and confused?  You won't be after this episode of Casting Church."  (Anyone get the 'Soap' intro play on words?)

Come on out, whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced caster, it is all fun to work on solving casting problems and casting challenges, particularly for shad.
If you are just getting started, this is a great way to meet people who can help.  There will be casting instructors on hand.
If you are preparing for an upcoming trip and looking to re-fresh your casting skills, this is a great opportunity.

Hey Regan:

I’m super interested in Spey—and, in fact, will have a blog coming out in VA’s DWR fishing newsletter soon on trout Spey that I wrote recently (as a newcomer to the style).

I’ll share it with the group when it runs—and you can correct my errors!

I’m hoping to make the clinic—and really interested in whether it can be applied to shad fishing in the Potomac (?).

Thanks,

Hi Peter

Yes, Spey casting can be used for shad on the Potomac.  In fact it opens up areas on shore that are otherwise not conducive to fly fishing, like Gordon’s and Walkers.  But you do need a sink tip to get the flies down.  I’ve done it and caught shad. I also had a lot of fun Spey casting at Falmouth Park on the Rapp this past Sunday with some folks from Orvis.

I’ve taken Spey lessons from Regan and he’s a terrific instructor.  I really suck at it, but my incompetence at it is entirely on me.  LOL. My point is that if I can catch shad doing it, anyone can.

Thanks, Jamie!  I assume a Skagit head with a sink tip would work on the Potomac?

Pete—I use either a OSTP Commando or Rio Gamechanger sinking head with an S8/9 sink tip. Getting hung up on the bottom is a part of getting deep. But that is where the shad are! Todd.

Hi Brooke's,
There is definite fun to be had in spey casting for shad on the Potomac.

A few of us spey cast from the from the bank for shad, from either shore.
We use both two-hand and single-hand setups and have had great fun.
At least one of us (me) has spey cast from the seated position from a fishing kayak, and even stood in same kayak, and successfully bombed out casts and had great fun with the shad. I have even caught shad on a swung fly, no stripping and they weren't accidentally snagged.

Hi Regan- does water level effect Casting Church? Looks like we'll be in the parking lot on Sunday?
PS- LOVE the Soap reference!

Water level does not matter much to Casting Church, unless the grass is under water.

This is really cool. Only been in the area since last July and I have an 11 foot TFO Switch rod I use to use for fishing the pacific north west while stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA. I think the skagit would be the way to go. You would definitely need to manage your sink depth with the length of your tip. All my tips are T14 in various lengths. You could also go the route of a scandi head with versi leaders. That way you could vary your sink rate with minimal change to your casting dynamics and deliver a more delicate cast. Very ecited to have found this group.
