Hey everyone!

Was going to try my luck on the Potomac tomorrow with a few of my buddies but with the high water, fletcher's cancelled our boat rental.  Wondering if there's any other places within 1.5 hours that might be good for shad fishing this weekend?  Or is fishing this weekend pretty much shot with all the rain we've had?

My friends don't have waders and such so preferably anything that allows for some bank fishing.  Appreciate any and all advice!

I have not fished it for shad personally so I can't speak to the bank fishing, but the Patuxent River may be running a bit more clear as it is a lot smaller than the Potomac and has some dams upstream to control flow. On the flip side it is sandy and muddy and can turn dirty easily - I am not sure how long it takes to clear up. Might not work out unfortunately.

Deer Creek is about 1.5 hours away and also has a shad run, but I am not sure if the hickory shad have arrived there yet. It runs behind the Potomac by a few weeks.

Not much access from shore, but The Occoquan has a decent shad run, and handles high water a bit better.  They do rent Kayaks at the park - call to find out if they are available this weekend.

The Rappahannock is with in range, but blown out and too high to safely fish.

There are kayak rentals available in Occoquan Regional Park as well as in downtown Occoquan - assuming that water is navigable right now.  There are various points where you can fish from shore - there is a wooden dock upstream of the boat launch in the Occoquan Regional Park.  You can also fish from the retaining wall downstream of the boat launch, or further down stream in the direction of the bridge in downtown Occoquan where there are manmade ramparts you can fish from.  These are on the Park side opposite downtown Occoquan.  Good luck!

Rappahannock River downstream of the Route 1 bridge there are two parks, one on the Northside and one on the Southside of the river. If the water continues to drop https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?01668000 fishing from the bank may be an option.
