First week of May I have to drive up to Philipsburg to visit a client in prison.  It's like 4 hours away approx.  I'll stay overnight, do the meeting, then drive back next day to Alexandria.  The travel roads are I-70 and I-99.

Where should I fish on the way up or the way back?
Thanks!

The little Juanita River near Tyrone PA . Great trout fishing!

+1 for Art's suggestion (that's Juniata, not Juanita btw). Sulphurs should be hatching strong by then!

If the water level is too high, check out Tipton Run below Tipton Reservoir - just a few minutes off I-99. It's smaller, but has a good number of brown and brook trout.

Fish Bushkill Creek in Easton.  Get off US 22 at 13th Street exit. Wild browns.

Damn. I take that back. I read your subject line as P-burg, NEW JERSEY. Oooops!

Yep Little Juniata is on the way, and it's tied for my favorite stream in PA, the other being Penn's Creek which you are also nearby while you're up there. Penn's is over at Coburn, PA, my favorite spots on the Little J are by Barree, PA.

Little J is more of a freestone stream with "limestone influence," while Penn's is a true limestone spring creek. Little J is bigger and more prone to fluctuations in water levels, so if that's a concern when you go then Penn's may be the better option. Penn's is no pushover though, and both get a fair amount of pressure.

Beginning of May you will likely see Sulphurs and may see some other big mayflies like March Browns flying around, and perhaps Blue Wing Olives. Consult a hatch chart, for sure.

Do we know anyone (trustworthy) who may want to meet me to fish these streams on May 7?  I'll have a good chunk of time.

Best Regards,
Phoenix

To the extent "trustworthy" includes honesty about the size and number of fish caught, you may be barking up the wrong tree on a fishing board.  😁

Cheers,

Hi Phoenix-
I fished Penns last July and loved it! Stop in and chat with the folks at the Feathered Hook Fly Shop in Coburn (http://www.thefeatheredhook.com/) they were a great help.
Right around the prison is Fisherman's Paradise on Spring Creek as well - there is lots of great trout water in the Penn State region!
I hope that is helpful!

Phoenix,

Penns has come up a few times. As great as it is, it's really far out of your way. Spring Creek could work - easier to fish solo than the Little J.  Still a bit east of the travel route but not by a whole lot.

Despite attending PSU only 5 years ago, all of my fly fishing connections in that area have since moved away - can't help you there.
