The question came up at Beer Tie: which came first? Super-quotable Bruce Campbell horror romp, Army of Darkness? Or Carl Hiaasen's comic crime caper, Skin Tight?

The Internets have spoken...

Skin Tight: 1989

Army of Darkness: 1992

But... the scene where Ash (Bruce Campbell) loses his hand and replaces it with a chainsaw is actually in Evil Dead 2 -- released 1987. So it's possible Hiaasen copped the idea for Chemo's weed whacker from Evil Dead II. However, Hiaasen says the inspiration was from watching bouncers try to control a mosh pit. See this transcript from the New York Public library [.DOC]: http://bit.ly/1whif0T

We may never know the truth.

Dan - althought the Boom stick is S-Mart's top of the line, it appeared in all three films including Army of Darkness. Had to give it a dutiful mention, haha

Agreed, Rob.

Even better, everybody should read ALL of Hiassen's work.

Not my genre, but I love to see the reference to reading books.  Do Americans do that anymore?  I figured all the drinking fountains would dispense Red Bull by now to be honest with you.  I'm surprised to see water every time I push the button.  Pretty soon asking for water will be met with "you mean that stuff in the toilet?" (bonus points awarded for reference)

What's this "Army of Darkness"?  Bah.  Go with the Left Hand of Darkness, my favorite.

Army of Darkness is a hilarious cult classic film about a guy with a chainsaw for a hand who gets sucked into a time vortex and has to fight medieval demons. Full of great one-liners and cheesy special effects.

Double Whammy, for those who do not know, is a hilarious rip on pro bass fishing. Not that fly rodders ever get smug about anything, but if you wanted to feel smug about pro bass fishing, Double Whammy will you get you there with some good laughs.

Double Whammy is one of my favorites but as Mark said, read them all. They are great.

Could you imagine the fish in the Potomac from the Brawndo runoff?  The electrolytes would make for some powerful fighters.
