Washington State Steelhead Guide?

My son and I are going to be in the Seattle area in late December and may have time to spend a day fishing.  Any one have any recommendations for a good guide for steelhead?

I was under the impression that most of the puget sound rivers are either closed or get so few fish that it is a lost cause.  If you have the time the OP may be a good option with the chance for some early natives.  Look up JD love...

 

I do have a buddy out there that is really into fishing the beaches for sea run cutthroats.  Supposedly pretty close to seattle.

I used John Farrar ((206) 324-3605) to Spey cast for stlhd when I was in Seattle. John was one of the early pioneers in Spey fishing in the Pacific NW and is credited with originating the Snap-T Spey cast.

I enjoyed my day on the water with John. He was very knowledgeable about the sport of Spey cast and was eager to coach me with my casting.

The premier shop in Seattle is called Emerald Water Anglers, and it is run by my buddy Dave McCoy, who is a great guide and Patagonia Ambassador.  They run a whole variety of trips in the area including steelhead all over the region and sea run cuts on the sound.  They just opened a shop in West Seattle that is one of the cooler shops I've ever been to.  All of their guides are very professional, super fishy, and a pleasure to be around.  They'll be very upfront and honest with you about the conditions and expectations.  The fishing in the area can be very tough but you're guaranteed to have a good day and learn a lot with these guys.  You can check them out at http://www.emeraldwateranglers.com/.

I used Emerald Waters for a day trip, and they were fantastic group of people. We fished for sea run cutthroats in pudget sound at several locations and had a great time.  Reid, normally the manager of the shop, was our guide.  

Winter steelhead should be showing up for Deember - Skagit River an epic float.

December is a pointless time to fish the OP. The big wild winter fish don't start showing up till the middle of January. In December the Puget Sound is in fact the better fishery, they will be flooded with hatch brats. Most S river shut down right around the first of February, so fear not.
The Avid Angler runs guided floats on the Sky, Sauk, Skagit and are more than capable spey casting instructors.
Dave Mccoy and his group are also a good bet, but they are almost certainly booked up by now.
Also, don't discount the Cowlitz river. It is a hatch brat factory, but there isn't a river in WA that gets more fish. Their hatchery program is light years ahead of the chambers creek program.
If I had a drift boat I'd take you guys out and put you on fish.

If its anything like the steelhead in PA. Call some local shops to get ideas on what streams. And just get there around 430 am.  If you aren't catching or seeing any. Drive to another stream.  Hope you find them, they are fun fish.

Fishing out west is not like fishing the great lakes.  Maybe the hatchery streams are a bit different, but generally if you get a fish out west, consider if a good day.

if you have the money and time to do a guide that's awesome.... also highly recommend just wading out from the public beaches... Lincoln Park in West Seattle and Golden Gardens are two of my favorites.
