Hi folks,

I'm relatively new to the area - grew up in the north fly fishing the West Branch of the Delaware and Beaverkill river for trout.  While I am excited to give the Potomac and other local warm water tributaries a shot, I'd really love to be able to find some trout water in the area.  The catch: I don't have a car.  From everything that I've read, it looks like most trout streams are an hour plus either north or west of DC.  I've read some posts on Holmes Run and other local spots that I would be able to metro / cab on over to, but I would really appreciate any input on these streams & any other possible local options.  Thanks!

I'm not sure how someone who grew up fishing the Catskills could be at all excited by Holmes run. Unless you really want to catch a trout, your best bet is to stick to the warm water fishing around DC which is actually quite interesting. Assuming you have the time, you would be better off renting a car and heading west to hit some of the better trout streams.

Cam- I am also new to D.C. but I do have a car with me. I'm pretty excited about the different fishing opportunities within driving distance. If you're interested let's meet up one day for a cold beverage and possibly plan some trips. I'm hailing from NC with experience on the blue ridge trout streams and outer banks saltwater fish abundance. I have been psyched up about all these monster stripers in the Potomac though! I've ordered a few crab pots to dump in the Chesapeake if you're interested on a few runs for some blue crabs too..

NW Branch Anacostia River - maybe Evan D can chime in with some more info. It's a stocked stream and you can reach portions via metro.

Thank you all for the input - this is helpful.  Preston I'll message you privately

Can anyone confirm trout stocking on the NW Branch Anacostia River? I'm having some difficulty finding solid information, trout stocking schedules, or access points online

Thanks!
Cam

Cam,

Below is a link to the trout stocking schedule.  I don't fish for stocked fish often, but NWB Anacostia is close by my house so I fish it occasionally.  You could take a metro and/or quick uber ride to access sections of it.  MDDNR also has a trout stocking map, if needed.  I find that most NWB trout are taken by bait fisherman within hours of opening day.  So, skip over the big holes and focus on runs and pocket water.  You'll have to work for your fish, but it is rewarding when you find one.  It is actually a very nice stream and you'll run into some panfish once it warms a bit.

Thanks!
