NCC-TU, TPFR, & CCA Maryland Present

The Tidal Potomac Slam– A Catch, Photo and Release Tournament

The National Capital Chapter of Trout Unlimited, The Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders and CCA Maryland's Greater Washington Chapter are proud to present the first annual Tidal Potomac Slam fishing tournament. A multi-week event, compete for great prizes and bragging rights, while helping to support Friends of Fletcher’s Cove in its quest to restore the Cove and protect this unique urban fishing resource for generations to come.

Sponsored by Sweetwater Brewing, RepYourWater, District Angling, Costa Sunglasses, and Engel Coolers, the Tidal Potomac Slam is a celebration of the arrival of spring and all of the migratory species that return each year to our Nation’s River! So join the fun and get in on this year’s Shadness Madness!

Divisions
Fly Shore & Boat – Striped Bass, American Shad, Hickory Shad, & Wildcard
Spin Shore & Boat - Striped Bass, American Shad, Hickory Shad, & Wildcard

Format and Rules
Catch, Photo, & Release
o   All fish must be caught on artificial and flies only (no bait).
o   All fish must be caught on the Potomac River from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to Little Falls Spillway. Tributaries are excluded.
o   There is no minimum size limit for target species but all fish caught must be submitted to iAngler the day they are caught and safely released*  to qualify.

o   All photo entries must be submitted to iAngler with acceptable ruler in clear view. Unclear images will be up to the judges’ discretion.
o   Participants can fish for both divisions, but cannot cross-pollinate (ie a spin-caught fish cannot be entered into fly category).

*Follow proper catch & release practices and handle fish with care at all times. Avoid stressing fish by bringing the fish to your boat as quickly as possible. If possible, please "keep 'em wet". If not, please ensure that your hands are wetted prior to handling a fish and do not rest a fish on the ground or surface of the boat. Photographs of fish in the water are sufficient, provided the ruler is visible and provides an accurate measurement of the fishes length. You do not need to use the iAngler App to photograph the fish. If faster, you should photograph the fish on your phone or camera and later import the photo into the iAngler app.

Prizes
o   Individual Category Winners (8 winners, 4-Fly, 4-Spin)*
- Largest (by length) Striped Bass, American Shad, Hickory Shad, & Wildcard (all other species caught)
- Winners receive trophy and sponsor prize pack (further details to come)
o   Slam Champ (2 winners)*
-  Fly & Spin - highest total combined inches of largest specimen for each target species
- Winners receive trophy and sponsor division prize pack (further details to come)
o   Champion of the Potomac - Grand Champ (1 winner)*
Largest total slam (fly & spin) in combined inches.
-  Winner receives large trophy and sponsor grand prize pack (further details to come)

*Each contestant can only win 1 prize/prize package
(i.e. the Champion of the Potomac cannot also win Division Slam package and/or Category package)

Thanks for sharing and putting this on. I’m getting more pissed by the minute that I joined the tournament committee because I won’t be able to compete.

Everyone sign up soon and get ready to start fishing!

I know a lot of guys like to use heavy spinning jigs fished on 10 weight rods for striper/catfish. If a fish is caught on a spinning lure on a fly rod what category should it be entered into?

The Pinnocchio Category.

This looks like a great time and a great way to raise money!

I have two questions:

1. Is the Pentagon Lagoon considered off-limits (near Columbia Island Marina)?  It's not technically a tributary, just a big basin in a side channel off the main flow of the river.

2. There was some talk at the beer tie about catfish not being eligible.  Is this the case or does it not matter now that bait is not allowed?

Really looking forward to this.

I'm going to defer to Andrew on rule specifics, who I think is doing his best to break some Echo rods in Belize but he'll be back in a couple days.

Hey everyone,

Very excited to be putting this on with TPFR. Let me answer both questions:

1) Spin lures ("jiggums") on a fly rod would be considered for the fly fishing division, though that certainly is a grey area.

2) No fish species are excluded. 50 lb blue cats are fair game.

Hope to see everyone on the river this spring and please sign up to support a great cause!

Tight Lines,

Oh and yeah the Lagoon isn't part of the tournament, the main-stem only this year. We may expand the boundaries next year, depending.

Not my tournament by lures on a fly rod is not fly fishing, especially if a fly line is not being used which I am guessing it isn't if you are fishing for catfish.. I guess this is more of a fun tournament than anything too serious, but i would use igfa rules.

Andrew,

Please define “main-stem”.  I know there are grey areas, and there are boundaries that define what is a tributary and what is the main river.

If the Pentagon Lagoon is off limits, does that also mean the Tidal Basin is also off limits?  What about Washington Channel?  Or the mouth between Gravelly Point and the airport?  How about 4 Mile Run as it exits by Washington sailing marina and the south end of the airport?  Oxen Cove or the Spoils?

Thanks for the replies Andrew!

No worries on the lagoon, figured it was a stretch. I've occasionally encountered walleye and gar over there so I was eyeing it up for the wild card category.

As for catfish I don't have the gear to go after them from boats on "fly gear" but I am going to try to get a big one on heavy spin tackle. We'll see how it goes!

Andrew if it would help, I have access to GIS software at work and could take a few minutes to draw up a map of the tournament area boundaries.  Google Maps could be used to do almost the same thing and a link to the map could be shared here.

Hi everyone,

I am discussing these questions with the tournament committee further. We are going to use IGFA rules so "jiggumz" and similar lures will not be considered for the fly-fishing division. Catches utilizing lures will be entirely in the spin division.

We will revert back with official boundaries shortly.

Best,

Andrew

Sorry for all of the confusion here on the rules. Andrew, Trent, and I have discussed these details further yesterday and today, and have made some updates. We’ve finalized the guidance to have this set for the tournament to start next weekend. Thanks for the detailed questions from all of you.

The fly fishing division requires the use of fly rods fly reel, and fly line, with no restrictions on leader length or weight of fly. Yes, this may include heavy bucktail jigs fished with fly rod, fly reel, fly line, and long leader. I don’t think we want to go with strict IGFA rules here, as this prohibits the use of multiple lures and flies, a very common and accepted tactic for shad fishing. IGFA rules may also further restrict the breaking strength of leaders and tippets unnecessarily.

For the fishing boundaries, we want to stick to he nearby Tidal Potomac waters excluding tributaries with easily recognizable and enforceable boundaries, and to include access points for those with and without power boats. This is inconsistent with the previous guidance but we think the following makes the most sense. Western boundary is water generally VA/DC line with one exception (Roaches Run), which includes mouth of Four Mile Run East of The GW Parkway, Pentagon Lagoon, Gravelly Point, Roaches Run the channel inside Roosevelt Island. To the east, the River includes non-tributary Potomac waters including the Spoils, Oxen Cove, the Washington Channel, and Tidal Basin, but not including inside Oxen Creek (upstream of the cove), Anacostia River upstream of the Capitol St bridge, Rock Creek, or the C&O Canal. To the South, the Boundary is the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. To the North the boundary is Little Falls Dam. Participants should note that a DC license is required for almost all areas of this tournament, but a Virginia or Maryland License would be required at Roaches Run and the Spoils.

The websites are updated to include the new details. Obviously, if we’ve missed something, please let us know.

Thanks,
Dalton

I can't wait to argue over whether a shad is an American or a Hickory... I have been known to mistake them!
