This isn't a local issue, but many of us have had the pleasure of fishing South Florida and some have asked me to post about this.

The general conclusion by scientists is that Lake Okeechobee is holding too much fresh water, then getting discharged to the east and west into a couple rivers rather than south to the Everglades. The damages are twofold, with some rivers having too much freshwater and other ares with too much saltwater, damaging fish and plant life. Some news outlets this spring showed pictures of fish kills in the Indian River Lagoon due to this imbalance.

A petition located here, seeks supporters to allow more of Okeechobee's waters to flow South into the Everglades: http://gladesdeclaration.org

If you are inclined to do so, sign this petition.

Thanks, Dalton. I will be signing, as those freshwater releases nearly ruined my Fort Myers fishing trip earlier this year - to say nothing of the long term harm they cause by killing grass beds and oysters.

Signed this a few days ago. These discharges impact the places I fish when I visit FL. Several Beaches have been closed on the treasure coast from Blue/Green algae blooms that are killing sea life, lagoon life and dangerous to humans.
