Driving to Boone from DC will have maybe 4 hours to fish, would prefer SW virgina rather than across the border so i don't need to buy another license.

Any suggestions? Is whitetop laurel creek a good spot?

white top can be.  it blows out easily so watch the weather.  Down that way is Bull Pasture and the Jackson.  Both have treated me well over the years.

But I am only slightly familiar with that area. hopefully someone else can add some insight.

Whitetop is a pretty sweet stream but in the two times I've fished it, the first was years ago when I didn't know what I was doing and it was full of leaves in the fall, and the second time it was blown out, so I've never had much success there.  It seems like it has miles of awesome water though. I'd also recommend checking out its tributaries.  Not sure what you're fishing for, but if you're willing to go into some of the smaller mountain streams, they get much less pressure.

I had some success on White Top a few years ago in late May.  There are lots of places to pull off and park -- if you're not having success or there are too many other people, just go to another spot. Definitely worth checking out if you'll be in the area.

As long as the release is right, I would definitely fish the South Holston over Whitetop Laurel this time of year. BWO's in the morning and Sulphurs in the afternoon. Even if they are releasing, you could get a nice morning in on the lower river before the water reaches you. Lots of big browns, and this is the best time of year to catch them on dries.

If you are already going to be in Boone and prefer small stream, I'd drive into the Wilson Creek drainage and fish there.
