Hello folks,

I have been charged with researching/planning a fishing trip in December and was wondering if any of you could advise on possible destinations. This would probably be a overnight trip, so I am looking for spots within three hours of the District, best if its . I'm still getting into fly-fishing and learning the area, so any advice/insight would be appreciated.  Ideas so far include stripers on the Chesapeake even though it seems a little late for that, and some of the trout spots around the region.

What's best?

Thank you,
Hudson

Musky on the James River! Although musky fishing is a low percentage high reward game December can be a good month to get one. Contact Matt Miles from Matt Miles flyfishing. Hes an awsome guy!

Also float fishing on the Yough from Confluence PA to Ohio Pile PA can be good for trout and smallmouth in December as well. Contact Mike Steiner at Nemicolin Woodlands resort to book a float. I have fished with Mike quite a bit he is completely dialed in.

My preference would be breakfast at Sheetz followed by morning on Falling Springs then off to the Letort for a few hours. Lunch at Sheetz and finish at Yellow Breeches. You get to fish three awesome streams within a close range.

Rob, I think one of these days you should decide whether you want to influence where people fish or where people eat. You're splitting the baby!

Rob's suggestion is good, but Beth and I tend to replace one of the Sheetz trips with an IHOP or Cracker Barrel.

We prefer the 40+ crowd.

If time allows Cracker Barrell trumps just about all other.

Monopoly secret - they can't use the fry cartons once the game has ended. They'll give you a case of them the night they expire if you ask politely.

Peel off all the pieces and keep the ones with free food coupons. Recycle the cardboard.

That is more ethical than taking redeemed pieces from behind the register when your register person walks away.

Sounds as if you have personal experience with this.

And both of those are more ethical than pocketing 4" of napkins from the "self serve" station and putting them in your glovebox for post-fishing respiratory syndrome (PFRS).

Waffle House guy myself. Hash browns covered, smothered, and capped.

Musky fishing looks like a blast, and I'll definitely float the idea.  Thanks for the idea and guide tip.

As for hiring a guide, there are four or five of us going on the trip. Not sure what  exactly what our budget would be, but with that many people I think we could make something work.

Our trip was planned for stripers earlier this month, but we couldn't make our schedules work. Do you think it would be too late to target them next month?

Thanks guys,
Hudson

So If you go musky fishing your best chances of getting one are from a boat and typically you can only have two anglers per boat so 4 guys total and 2 guides rowing. Again its a very low percentage game. The odds of getting one are much lower than most species. Fish of 1000 casts!

As far as next month goes I would ask some guides in the area you plan to fish but in my experience December can be a productive month.  What are the skill levels of the guys that plan to go with you?

Yeah, can they cast a metal rod with a fly reel taped to it?  That's the first question any self-hating musky angler should be asking!

Found this MacGyvered rod on Four Mile. It's pretty much my favorite found rod ever.  It's like a classic bamboo and a world record muskie rod mixed... bred for its skills in magic.

Hudson -

The striper bite is still going strong in the Bay, Virginia Beach, and Ocean City. I'd give that a look for sure - closer drive and probably better action. Although feel free to chase the musky dream, where one fish makes it all worth it.

Stay fly,
Rem
