I was wondering what are some good places to put in a kayak.  Does Fletcher's allow that or do they only want renters?

You can launch from Fletchers.  I haven't done it myself but I've seen people do it.  It makes me a little nervous as I'm new to kayaking and the river can be pretty intimidating there, not to mention a couple hundred yards downstream.

You can put it in at fletchers, but I don't know how effectively you will be able to fish from it.  I assume you have an anchor of some sort?

Put in on an incoming tide and when there's no rain and it's really no problem to paddle up to Chain Bridge then float down. An anchor trolley system works pretty well. just park the yak out of the main flow.

Rich, I have been a regular in my kayak at Fletchers for the past 3 years. ( I Plan on being there this weekend.)

1. Don't leave your kayak on top of your car going through the tunnel.  I take mine off in upper parking lot and put it in the back of my hatchback to go through the tunnel.
2. The best place to put in is at the far end of the lower parking lot.  You can back down close to the water and take your kayak off, then park back up in the lot.
3. Anchoring in a kayak is always a challange, the use of an anchor trolley is a good idea ( see internet )  my anchor is a 3 lb. rock on the end of a rope.  Don't need more than 3 lbs.
4. A knife is a must to cut the rope if the rock gets stuck / and it will.  I have had to cut away 2x in the past 3 years. the beauty is, you paddle over to shore and get another rock.
5. Don't anchor in the main current.
6. Always were your life vest and have a whistle attached to it.

Couple of notes:
  1. According to NPS regulations, it is only permitted to launch vessels from approved boat launch ramps.  The lower parking lot is not a ramp.
  2. Backing down the grass to the water is illegal and if caught you face a fine.  Park your boat and carry your kayak to the water.
  3. The more people that back down the grass, the more you will ire NPS and eventually they will enforce note # 1 above, and ruin it for everyone.
  4. Ditto to the life vest and knife – these are a must.

#2 should read “park your car and carry your kayak to the water.”
