I will be at Fletcher's Saturday morning about 9 if anyone wants to get in some casting practice. Let me know what you would like to work on.
Lower level parking lot, look for the green suburban.

Hi John,
I'd like to work on adding distance to my cast and maybe try to learn the snap-t cast if you have time.  Thanks for the offer.

That's a good one -- I can spend almost an entire day doing nothing but snap-Ts (or snake rolls if I'm on the other side) on rivers like the Jackson, and it is a pretty ideal, lazy way to cover water.  Depending upon what you're doing, a snap cast and a mend works pretty well too.    Dan explained this on here when I was asking about this "half of a snap-T" cast one day.  What he didn't mention is that it makes a total liar out of anyone who says that "the line goes where the rod tip stops" ;).  Not that saying that isn't useful -- it's just funny.

Any chance a relative newbie would be welcome? I've only been fishing about 1.5 years, and it's been a few months since my last cast, so I'd be rusty, but I would really welcome the chance to get some practice in around more accomplished folks.

Thanks,
Logan

If willing, I'd be interested in any casting techniques for use during the shad run, pretty new to that type of fishing and haven't really used my 8 wt at all.

Steven,
If you have a  sinking  line or tip bring it. If not a floating line is ok. We will work on an oval cast.

John,

how much time will you dedicate to us?
It's like I want to do and practice every possible cast so I'll probably bring a whole bunch of rods and just follow The Master.

Jeff,
It depends a little on how many show up. I usually rotate through the group and individually try and work with each person.
Since we've worked together before bring as many TH rods as you want and we will take it from there. I usually start with what do you want to work on and go from there.

John's help is a real treat -- the first fly rod I was given I took to a Sunday casting thing about 3 years ago now (?).  Anyway, John picked up my fly rod that I knew "needed a different line" and casted it perfectly, and then offered some good pointers on my own cast.  It's funny how that fly line works better for some people than others ;).

Anyway -- the FFF certified folks are (from what I gather) required to not only cast well, but more importantly -- articulate how to cast in order to help others.  Anyone who has taught in a classroom will tell you that there's a difference between knowing something and knowing something well enough to teach it.

Take advantage!

Hi John:

I apologize for a question that may seem obvious, but are you going in the water?

I just started fly fishing last year and haven't yet purchased waders (I want to earn them by getting better at the basics first). I'm probably in a similar position as Logan. Thanks!

Hey,

I would like to join as well. As I am very new to fly fishing this will be very helpful. Just to clarify to get there I should just put in the location of Fletcher's cove? (Obviously new to the area as well)

See you all Saturday,

Anthony

Put in fletcher's boat house.  You pull in by the extremely abrupt turn-in that parallels canal road.  Then you drive over the little bridge and through the tunnel the runs under the Canal and you'll see everyone.

Remember the route, because you may want to use it for the shad run here in a couple of weeks and it'll most likely be dark when you show up to rent a boat at 5:30 am.

You can go here to get directions. For two handed rods, you will want to be in the water, for the single handers you are fine in the grass; if this doesn't make sense then you probably don't need waders.

As an FYI, Orvis is offering free Fly Fishing 101 classes in all of the area locations taught by the IFFF certified guys in our club on Saturdays and Sundays this Spring (starting this Saturday). These are pretty basic, focused on people who have never picked up a rod but are useful for beginners.

Jamie,
You don't need waders especially if you are just working with a single hand rod. Most of the single hand folks practice on the grass area. Just tie a piece of yarn at the end of your leader, or I will have some with me.

I hope to have another instructor or two on hand. We will all work with whoever is there.
