It's looking to be uber-frigid everywhere within 2.5 hours of NoVa this weekend. Are any of you going to brave the elements and go fishing? Just wondering. I'll probably snowboard instead.

I am not crazy enough to go fishing, but apparently crazy enough to go out to West Virginia to cross country ski. -7 on Saturday out there.

Sweet. I'll be snowboarding in WV at Timberline.

Maybe -- but much like the fish, I'm not willing to move too much to do it.

It depends though -- when it gets into single digits and teens, the guide icing and finger numbness gets kind of ridiculous ;).  I may just continue tying and casting on the grass.  I think I pretty much milked the entire month of December and much of January getting a ton more fishing than usual in with Beth, and should probably just take that and run with it.

BTW, the FF706 casts a 6.5WF and 6DT quite well.  Talk about a fun rod!

I left after 45 minutes.  Fish biting, but too cold...for me anyway.

You probably don't get much action when the fibers of your soft hackle are frozen.

Lol, actually, they (it) worked like always.  I had to put my hands in the water to stave off the burn...and I really don't like putting my hands in there.

Rod guides, rod blank, and even the thin layer of "wet" on the cork grip froze over.  Oh, and some ice forms on the fly line too.

The rest of the weekend should be even worse, so I'm done --

Ha, I floated with a guide in Tennessee a few weeks ago when it was windy and in the teens, most I've ever paid to be that cold... But we switched a little between midges/eggs and streamers. The streamers became solid ice after sitting in the boat for a few minutes and floated on sinking lines; when they finally thawed in the water and we stripped them, 1-2" snowballs formed on our gloves. Never again... well, until I forget about it next year.

Ah, they say humans don't remember pain very well.  I believe it, because it has great explanatory power ;).

Yeah, when you start getting multiple ice problems (eyelets, flies, line, hands/gloves) it sort of reaches a point where you just get tired out it and start to question your sanity when you know you could just go somewhere warm.

If by soft hackle you mean huevos, I agree.
